Everyone knows her as Nana Patekarâs wife. But her own story gets really interesting.
She cracked IIT exam, but then she made a critical decision that changed the course of her life. đ
Neelakanti Patekar studied Physics, and her father wanted her to pursue a conventional academic career.
She appeared for the IIT entrance examination and cleared it.
But acting was already pulling her towards theatre.
She chose the stage.
In 1973, she won the Gold Medal for Best Actress at the Maharashtra State Drama Competition.
She later moved into Marathi cinema and won the Maharashtra State Governmentâs Best Actress award for Aatm Vishwas in 1989.
She married Nana Patekar in 1978.
Their marriage brought both happiness and devastating loss. Their first child died at around two and a half years old, and they later had their son, Malhar.
Over the years, Neelakanti and Nana began living separately, though they remained married.
After years away from acting, she returned to the screen in Chhaava in 2025, playing Dharau.
For years, the public knew her mainly through her connection to Nana Patekar.
But she had built an identity of her own long before that.
She had cleared IITâŚ
But she chose theatre instead.
Zeenat Aman said something about him that he never forgot.
And it came when actors refused to work with him because of his skin colour.
In a 2023 interview, Mithun opened up about the discrimination he faced early in his career.
Despite winning the National Film Award for Mrigayaa (1976) for his debut film, he struggled to find acceptance in mainstream Bollywood.
He recalled being judged for his dark complexion and said the rejection affected him deeply.
Then came Zeenat Aman.
Mithun recalled that she was among the first major actresses willing to work with him. He remembered her describing him as âa very handsome, good-looking boy.â
For someone who had repeatedly been made to feel that his appearance was a disadvantage, hearing those words from a leading actress meant the world.
It was a moment of validation at a time when he was struggling to be accepted.
Mithun eventually became one of Hindi cinemaâs biggest stars, but he never forgot the actress who made him feel seen when others were judging him.
He says, he is grateful to her. âĽď¸
Several actors turned down a role in Devdas because Shah Rukh Khan was the hero. Jackie Shroff accepted it anyway, and his reason was surprisingly simple.
When Sanjay Leela Bhansali offered Jackie the role of Chunnilal in Devdas (2002), it meant playing a supporting character alongside Shah Rukh Khan.
According to Jackie, other actors had turned down the part. They may have been reluctant to take a role that put them in Shah Rukhâs shadow.
Jackie saw it differently.
He was comfortable playing a supporting character if the role was good. He didnât need to be the hero to make an impression. â¨
As Chunnilal, he brought charm and warmth to the film, becoming an inseparable part of Devdasâs world.
The lesson? Sometimes, the role other actors overlook can become one of the most memorable performances in a film. âĽď¸
This one is for the OG Cricket fans.
He was a naturally gifted batsman, whose career was ruined due to involvement in match fixing.
Any guesses who he is? đ
Rajpal Yadav thought he had lost Shah Rukh Khanâs trust over a film he supposedly rejected. Then he discovered something that changed the entire story.
Rajpal shared this story in an interview with Times Now in April 2026.
The confusion involved Om Shanti Om (2007).
Rajpal recalled that Shah Rukh had wanted to work with him in a bigger role after their earlier interactions.
But when a role was discussed for Om Shanti Om, someone reportedly told the makers Rajpal was unavailable.
Rajpal said he knew nothing about the offer and had never turned it down.
He suspected someone had misrepresented him, making it appear he had rejected the opportunity. He never publicly identified anyone responsible.
The misunderstanding reportedly had another consequence: Rajpal missed out on the lead role in Billu Barber, which eventually went to Irrfan Khan.
Then, while working on Billu, Rajpal met Shah Rukh Khan.
Instead of the cold reception he feared, Shah Rukh hugged him warmly.
Rajpal recalled that the superstar didnât hold the misunderstanding against him.
Sometimes, a misunderstanding can cost you a major opportunity before you even know it existed.
She refused to serve a filmmaker food. The next day, her role in the film was drastically reduced. When she confronted him, his response was even more shocking.
It happened during the making of Jagir (1984).
In a recent interview with Bollywood Thikana, actress Priti Sapru recalled attending actor Danny Denzongpaâs birthday celebration on the second day of shooting.
The entire film unit had been invited.
Director Pramod Chakravorty arrived after pack-up and asked her to serve him food.
Priti refused. She felt she was there as an actress, not to serve the director.
The next day, she claimed, everything changed, despite having been promised a much bigger role.
Priti confronted the director and pointed out that the character she had been offered was completely different from what she was now being asked to do.
She even requested that her name be included under guest appearances, since she had already completed a day of shooting.
His response?
âI have Zeenat Aman. I will not give your name.â
According to Priti, he also told her she wouldnât last in the film industry.
Govinda rejected a role given by Subhash Ghai. The reason for it left the filmmaker stunned. What Subhash Ghai told him next was brutal.
In an interview, Ghai recalled that Govinda had approached him after delivering several hits, asking him to write a good film for him.
Ghai began writing Taal with Govinda in mind, specifically the role that Anil Kapoor eventually played.
But when Ghai narrated the story, Govinda had a problem with it.
He felt Akshaye Khanna would get the heroine, leaving him looking like a supporting actor.
Ghai was stunned by his reaction.
He told Govinda, âI donât think you should be doing this film, because you havenât understood it.â
Govinda walked away from the project.
Ghai then approached Anil Kapoor, who took the role. His performance earned him several Best Supporting Actor awards.
Taal went on to become a major hit after its release in 1999.
Govinda had asked Ghai to write him a good film. But when Ghai finally did, Govinda couldnât see what the filmmaker saw in the role.
Subhash Ghai made one comment about Neena Guptaâs body that left her furious. Decades later, she admitted she sees the incident very differently.
It happened while she was shooting Choli Ke Peeche for Khalnayak (1993).
In a 2026 interview, Neena recalled arriving for the song in a costume that Ghai wasnât happy with.
He wanted her to look fuller. Neena was asked to wear a padded bra.
Her reaction at the time?
âTab toh mujhe bahut gussa aaya,â she recalled. âHow can he say something like that? So crass.â
She was new to the industry and felt the remark was inappropriate.
But hereâs the interesting part.
Looking back, Neena said she now understood that Ghai had a particular image in mind for the character. She explained that he wasnât staring at her, and that she eventually saw the incident differently.
âBut now I feel he was just doing his job,â she said.
The song went on to become one of the most memorable dance numbers in Hindi cinema.
Neenaâs story is a reminder of how an experience can feel very different when you look back at it years later.
Amrish Puri refused to work with Rajinikanth for a reason nobody would expect from a superstar like him.
But one unexpected move changed their relationship completely.
The story was revealed by Amrish Puriâs son, Rajeev Puri.
During an early interaction, Amrish felt Rajinikanth was throwing his superstar weight around.
The experience left such a bad impression that Amrish returned from Chennai and told the producer he wasnât comfortable working with him.
Imagine a veteran actor walking away from a film because he felt a superstar was behaving arrogantly.
But Rajinikanth did something unexpected.
He apologised to Amrish Puri.
That apology changed things between them. The two eventually worked together in nine films across Hindi and Tamil cinema, including Andhaa Kaanoon, Geraftaar and Thalapathi.
Rajeev recalled that his father was fond of Rajinikanth.
Itâs a reminder that even a superstar can choose humility over ego, and one sincere apology can change how two people see each other.
She made her Bollywood debut in Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi and earned recognition for her role in Ram Gopal Varma's Bhoot, and worked across films, television, and production.
But in 2012, she made a decision few would have taken.
Deeply drawn to Tibetan Buddhism and inspired by the Dalai Lama, Barkha Madan took ordination as a Buddhist nun and adopted the name Gyalten Samten.
The glamour, the cameras, and the career she had built were no longer her priority.
Today, her life revolves around Buddhist practice and a quieter path far removed from the film industry.
For someone who had experienced the spotlight, choosing a life of spiritual discipline meant redefining what success looked like.
Truly, sometimes, the most unexpected career change is the one that changes your entire idea of life. âĽď¸

âHe wonât get work even in ads and serials.â
Thatâs what a casting director said about Kartik Aaryan. Then much later, he watched one of Kartikâs films and called him with an apology.
Kartik revealed this in a Filmfare interview while recalling his early struggle to get into Bollywood.
He would queue for hours at auditions, only to be dismissed in front of everyone.
One popular casting director repeatedly ignored him and said:
âIska kuch nahin ho sakta. He wonât get work even in ads and serials. Heâs wasting his time. Heâll end up struggling all his life.â
Imagine hearing that when youâre still fighting for your first break.
Kartik kept trying. He eventually learned about the auditions for Pyaar Ka Punchnama through Facebook. He couldnât afford a portfolio, so he cropped pictures from his college album and sent them in.
The audition process took six months. The film finally happened, and his monologue became a sensation.
Then came the phone call.
The same casting director had watched one of Kartikâs films and called to apologise.
âIâm extremely sorry. The only time I went wrong in my whole career was with you. You proved me wrong.â
Kartik never revealed the casting directorâs name.
Imagine being so wrong about someone that years later, you have to call them and admit it. Nevertheless, a good act at the end!

âWe only work with stars, and canât work with you.â
Thatâs what Ayushmann Khurrana says he was told when he tried to get his first break in Bollywood.
It was 2007. Ayushmann was still a radio jockey when he met Karan Johar at an awards show and told him he wanted to become an actor.
Karan gave him his office number.
Ayushmann called the next morning, hoping to reach the filmmaker. After repeated attempts, he recalled being told that Dharma Productions didnât work with people like him. â¤ď¸âđŠš
At the time, Ayushmann was still trying to find his footing as an entertainer. He had built a name in radio and television, but getting a foothold in films was another challenge entirely.
Later, the two sat together on Koffee With Karan.
Ayushmann brought up the incident in front of Karan himself.
Karanâs response?
âI gave you the right number. That was very sweet of me! I mustâve thought that you have potential.â
Ayushmann pointed out that the whole point was to actually reach him. đ¤Śââď¸
Shakti Kapoor was slapped so hard that he thought his career was over.
After three slaps, he was upset and begged a veteran actor to book him a ticket home.
It happened on the sets of Mawaali (1983).
Shakti recalled that Kader Khan slapped him during his first shot. Then Aruna Irani slapped him in the next shot. The same thing happened a third time, and Shakti fell to the ground.
He was terrified.
He went straight to Kader Khan and pleaded with him to book an evening ticket out of Mumbai. He thought his career was finished, and he hadnât even married yet.
But then action director Veeru Devgan pulled him aside and gave him advice that changed his decision.
He told Shakti to stay. If the role required him to get slapped, so be it. Once the film released, people would recognise him.
Shakti listened.
And guess what Mawaali became a major hit, and audiences appreciated his character.
Sometimes, the role that makes an actor question his future becomes the one that helps people remember his name.
Akshay Kumar was once called âkachraâ in Bollywood. He was left in tears after being humiliated by a producer. What happened next was so unexpected.
According to filmmaker Suneel Darshan, Akshay had told him that people in the industry had called him âkachra.â
Darshan also recalled Akshay coming to him in tears after a producer spoke to him rudely. The humiliation was made worse by the fact that a film was due to release that Friday, yet there wasnât even a poster up for it.
Darshan decided to step in.
He arranged a prominent hoarding at Juhu Circle featuring Akshay alone to promote their upcoming film, Jaanwar.
The film went on to become a turning point in Akshayâs career, helping him regain his footing in Bollywood.
Sometimes, one personâs belief can make all the difference when an entire industry has written you off. âĽď¸

Remember the child actor known as âYoung Amitabh Bachchanâ, who also played an unforgettable role in Mahabharat?
He then moved away from showbiz to pursue a dream that took him thousands of miles away from India. âď¸
Mayur Verma played young Amitabh in films like Muqaddar Ka Sikandar and Laawaris. He later became familiar to TV audiences as Abhimanyu in BR Chopraâs Mahabharat.
Then, in 2007, he left the entertainment industry and moved to Wales with his family.
The surprising part? His next chapter had nothing to do with acting. He and his wife, Noori, built a restaurant business in the UK, with ventures including Indiana Cuisine and Chaska.
He chose a quieter life, giving his wife the opportunity to pursue her dream of becoming a chef while building a new career of his own.
Mayurâs story shows that sometimes the most interesting career move is the one nobody sees coming.
Jasprit Bumrah kept insisting that Sanjana Ganesan come to the balcony.
She had just arrived and wanted a glass of water.
But Bumrah kept saying, âBalcony mein chalo!â
She had no idea that the man who routinely handled pressure in front of millions was desperately trying to pull off the biggest surprise of their relationship.
Their love story had an awkward beginning, too.
They had crossed paths professionally, but neither made a great first impression on the other. Bumrah thought Sanjana was arrogant. She thought he was deliberately avoiding her.
It was only when they finally spoke properly that they realised they had misunderstood each other.
By 2020, they were dating. Then came the IPL in the UAE, where Bumrah played for Mumbai Indians and Sanjana worked with Kolkata Knight Riders.
There was a problem: COVID restrictions had placed each team in its own bio-bubble. They couldnât freely meet outside their professional interactions.
Bumrah had already bought a ring, hoping to find the right opportunity to propose. Rather than wait indefinitely, he approached the IPL officials and requested a special transfer that would allow Sanjana to visit him.
Once she arrived, he took charge of everything himself. He decorated his room, arranged a cake and set up candles on the balcony overlooking the beach.
There was just one thing he hadnât planned for: the wind kept blowing the candles out.
So while Sanjana wondered why he wouldnât even let her have a glass of water, Bumrah was trying to save his carefully planned romantic surprise.
Eventually, she reached the balcony and discovered what he had been preparing.
She was completely surprised, and the moment turned into a memory neither of them would forget.
The couple married in a private ceremony in Goa on March 15, 2021. In September 2023, they welcomed their son, Angad.
A Bollywood hopeful vanished in Mumbai.
Then police investigating another murder stumbled upon a connection that led them to him.
But the most disturbing part was who investigators suspected was behind it.
His name was Karan Kakkad. He had come to Mumbai hoping to make it in the film industry.
In 2012, he disappeared. His family searched for him, trying to retrace his final movements and find out who had last seen him.
One name emerged: Vijay Palande.
Palande was already under arrest in connection with the murder of businessman Arun Tikku. As investigators dug deeper, they began connecting him to Karanâs disappearance too.
Then came a grim discovery near Chiplun, Maharashtra.
Investigators recovered human remains, including a torso and a skull. DNA testing confirmed that the torso belonged to Karan. The skull, however, belonged to someone else, raising the possibility of another victim.
Police alleged that Karan had been murdered and his body disposed of to conceal the crime. Vijay Palande became the main accused in the case.
But the legal battle has dragged on for years.
In 2026, a special court closed the evidence stage and moved the trial to final arguments.
Palande has challenged aspects of the prosecutionâs evidence, including the handling of DNA findings. No final verdict in this case has been reported.
Karan came to Mumbai chasing a film career. Instead, his disappearance became part of a murder investigation that raised an even more disturbing question: whose skull had police found near Chiplun?
