Wish I'd written this. v3 brings Derive's nearly 6 year old thesis to life: - Blockchains are the ultimate rail for finance (24/7, programmable, open) - Options are the ultimate money lego for blockchains (building blocks for any payoff, tailorable, the most programmable derivative) The infinite payoff factory
The most interesting part of @DeriveXYZ V3 has very little to do with people trading directly on Derive. It’s about distribution. Hyperliquid already showed what can happen when an exchange becomes infrastructure for other apps: • Wallets like Phantom and Rabby own the frontend and the user relationship. • Hyperliquid provides the trading infrastructure. • The apps get paid for bringing the flow. And I think this is one of the more interesting ways to think about Derive V3. Derive doesn’t necessarily need every future options trader to become a direct Derive user either. It can become the options engine running underneath other products. Derive already has Builder Codes, so apps can route trades through Derive and monetize the activity they generate. V3 then makes that integration layer much more powerful by exposing the infrastructure builders need to create their own options products and UX. Imagine a wallet showing: “Protect my ETH from falling below $3,000.” The user doesn’t need to know they’re buying a put. Or a yield app showing: “Earn yield while being willing to sell ETH at $6,000.” Underneath, it can package an options strategy. This matters because options have a huge UX problem. Strikes, expiries, implied volatility, Greeks, strategy combinations. Most users don’t want to learn all of that. But maybe the answer isn’t teaching everyone how to use an options chain, it’s hiding the options chain completely. Let builders turn complex options positions into simple products users already understand: • Protection • Yield • Directional bets • Structured payoffs And let Derive handle the liquidity, execution and risk engine underneath. Hyperliquid proved the builder distribution model can work for perps. Derive now has a chance to test what that same model looks like for onchain options.

Replying to @JoestarCrypto
Derive is similar to Hyperliquid in that people can build whatever front end they want on top of it for different UI/UX. The liquidity and backend are what are important and extremely difficult to replicate. I'm very bullish teams building options on top of Derive infra.

Deribit's $ZEC options market is so privacy coded that you...can't actually see it. It doesn't exist. It might never exist realistically due to $ZEC being a privacy coin. The big break for @DeriveXYZ earlier this year was listing $HYPE options months before Deribit did, and they now dominate that market. If $ZEC continues to be the next PvE runner, it's just another mass onboarding event for Derive. And then it'll be $LIT ...and $VVV ...and $PUMP ...and $DRV itself 👀 The biggest mistake people made was thinking on chain options lost to perps because of how long it's taken to get to this point. There just weren't enough interesting, quality assets to list liquid options markets for, and building it all is HARD. On chain options are going to look like the 5'5 late bloomer who everyone bullied and then he hit 6'5 over a single summer.

This $ETH trade on @DeriveXYZ really got the people going so I'll explain my thought process. I'm not really interested in betting on an $ETH move to $3000, especially with tokens like $HYPE and $LIT pushing all time highs. $ETH trading like 1.1x $BTC beta isn't bad, but it's also not extremely interesting to me as a bet to make here in the near term considering there's plenty of beta outperforming $BTC here. Holding spot $ETH feels capital inefficient and as a perp would be expensive and path dependent. I'm betting on a meaningful ATH break within 6 months, and I think there are a few meaningful tailwinds that are unique to $ETH, and more importantly, unique to the level at which people are underestimating them: 1. Inclusion with $BTC as a "reserve" asset in anything resembling a strategic reserve. I think the strategic reserve overall might be an underpriced edge case, and $ETH being included, even nominally, more so. There's actually a good reason for the US to want to have some stake in the largest decentralized settlement layer. 2. Tokenized equities are cool and all, but tokenized bonds might actually be the massive TAM unlock that overwhelmingly favors $ETH over $SOL. The current rates environment globally makes this an extremely interesting edge case with tons of potential positive headline shock. 3. Trump and family have been extremely outspoken $ETH bulls. Their bullposting didn't work in a bear market, let's see what happens if they throw fuel on the fire in a more bullish environment. 4. Everyone hates $ETH. Extremely popular short leg for pair trades vs apps. With two rejections from 5k and years of underperformance, the level of hated rally and sidelined, jaded, despondent chasing from 🏳️‍🌈🐻 will be biblical. I also see $ETH as being on the precipice of a phase change between being some not for profit, public good, growth mode asset (think early stage 2010-2014 Uber in SF just cornering market share at no profit) to being able to more confidently monetize on it's high Lindy, credibly neutral status as the on chain, global settlement layer. Robinhood chain using $ETH over $SOL was quite a bit more signal than people give it credit for too, though $ETH is still making peanuts relative to what $ARB and $HOOD are making from sequencer fees. If the massively positive trends in tokenization and institutional adoption don't take $ETH to new ATHs within 6 months, it's kinda cursed as an asset, and I'd rather just keep holding the application layer tokens with massive cash flows. In fact, I thought this trade was so nice, I did it twice. Risking ~$780,000 for a max PNL of $40m now.
A trader on Derive just bought 10,000 of the $ETH March 2027 5,000/7,000 call spreads, paying $300k to win up to $20 million if $ETH hits $7k by March 2027 🤯 Only spent the last 10 years waiting for $5k ETH, hope this trader is right

Dear perps traders: if you’re not catching wicks and want to hold for more than a second Consider @DeriveXYZ “A static 5x perp needs ETH at $37,600 to match what the option spread pays at $7,000. And that's before funding: 10% annualized on $1.37M for 197 days is about $74k off the top, and on the 38x version it's $570k, already twice the entire option premium.” Note: dcf cap holds drv
Said another way, someone paid $27.30 per spread for a ~$2,000-wide payoff, so the markets risk neutral odds of $ETH clearing $7k by March 26,2027 is <1.4%. So this person has 197 days for ETH to move 107% for them to breakeven and ETH to move 187.5% for them to 72x their money. As someone who was bearish on options in a world of perps, the winning onchain venue must offer every flavor of leverage. For this trader to make $20M on ETH moving to $7k they'd need 4,321 ETH long from $2,435. That's $10.5M notional. On $273k of margin it's 38.5x, with liquidation roughly 2% below entry. A static 5x perp needs ETH at $37,600 to match what the option spread pays at $7,000. And that's before funding: 10% annualized on $1.37M for 197 days is about $74k off the top, and on the 38x version it's $570k, already twice the entire option premium. That said, if ETH grinds from $2.4k to $7k with low realized vol, a pyramided perp crushes the spread and keeps going past $7k. But if it gets there through two semi-major drawdowns, the perp trader is liquidated twice and the option holder collects in full having done nothing. I think the best version of this trade actually leverages both instruments, i.e., a perp for your core exposure and small OTM calls as gap insurance so a wick doesn't nuke the trade. You'd have uncapped upside and buy off the path dependence that would kill a levered directional bet. But that only works if both legs sit in the same account against the same collateral, which is pretty much my whole argument here.
