it's wild that one of the most useful facts in functional analysis is that 1/2 + 1/2 = 1

No one: "why are these called linear differential equations" I'm glad you asked:

I am particularly reminded of this quote today from The Newsroom: "You know what, kiddo? In the old days... of about ten minutes ago... we did the news well. You know how? We just decided to."

unironically believe that before all this stuff, this is still pretty much the only reason to do a PhD in math at least. this is the only reason that is canon event mental breakdown every other month proof
This is both a sufficient and necessary answer. Great post!

oop totally misremembered the exponents in the Loomis-Whitney argument in my recent tweet -- thanks for pointing this out (apologies I can't recall who did). in any case, (1) R^n >> R^d (2) whenever induction on dimension works by a Hölder argument *chefs kiss*

studying for quals, came across this quote by Sid Port "The one thing probabilists can do which analysts can't is stop-- and they have never forgiven us for it."

Anyone else keep a math "scientific" journal? Honestly it's been so helpful for studying for quals, thanks to my 7th grade science teacher for teaching me how to set one of these up

signed up for a last minute lighting talk; I can now officially say I've given a chalk talk at Renyi (asterisk of course, it wasn't a full lecture lol)

It's an April Fools joke but a true one. Everything on those billboards was actually proposed in 1947. It's only a joke now because of how unbelievable it is that we'd actually do it. Let's go deep on how we broke America's first subway and how to fix it.

i get people complaining about how short the final battle with vecna is, but let's face it the general public is not ready for a multi hour long battle (as it would take in actual DND). Most DND bosses involve chipping away at HP, strategy, and trying not to die and that happened

Same with Zane Donovan from the TV show Eureka
When I was 10 my parents left me to watch television unattended and I tuned in to a daytime movie where Vin Diesel had to go drill into an asteroid and he throwaway brags that he was “the top of his class at MIT” which I’d never heard of but decided then that I ought to check out
