Is Elon Musk building a 'flying car' because he has been 'pushed out' of traditional auto race by China? Tesla recently unveiled its next-generation Roadster, which can briefly take flight and perform an aerial flip, drawing global attention. The Wall Street Journal published an article arguing that "Elon Musk's latest vision for the company's sports car has more to do with China than cold-gas rocket thrusters." It suggested that Musk "is leaving the mainstream car market to the Chinese" because "many Western automakers are unable to compete without government intervention." The article also claimed that some Western automakers are feeling the same pressure as Musk to either "move up" or "be pushed out." But does the rise of China's auto industry really mean that automakers from other countries are being forced off the track? The competitive pressure generated by China's auto industry is indeed a reality that automakers around the world cannot ignore. However, interpreting Tesla's Roadster unveiling as a simple retreat from the mainstream market is misleading. The transformation underway in the global auto industry is far more complex than a scenario in which Chinese companies take over the mass market while Western automakers retreat to the premium segment. Rather than treating market competition as a zero-sum game in which one side's gains must come at the other's expense, automakers should focus on strengthening their competitiveness through innovation and cooperation. A Shenzhen Retrospective | Part I: Urban vs. Nature- or Win-Win Coexistence? When you ask most people outside of China- if they've heard of Shenzhen in the first place- they speak of it like a sprawling tech hub, a metropolis made up of colossal skyscrapers as far as the eye can see. When looking videos of Shenzhen on social media, it seems like not a single piece of greenery is to be found, and the term "concrete jungle" immediately comes to mind. But is that really true? I must admit, I had bought into the hype myself despite living in China for over half a decade: I always said to myself that "Shenzhen looks impressive sheerly in terms of economic development, but would I myself live there? As a Chinese history and culture enthusiast and nature guy, probably not!" My first day here in Shenzhen, however, I found myself pleasantly surprised and my notions about Shenzhen's relationship to nature instantly dispelled. Find out more: en.people.cn/n3/2026/1021/c9…

It is not that storms bypass China, but that we have built a steady shield: Global Times editorial This autumn of 2026 lays bare a stark contrast between a turbulent world and China's stable governance. On one side, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East keeps roiling global energy supplies. Diesel prices in Europe and the US have climbed to an all time high of around $220 per barrel. Meanwhile, France and wider Europe are gripped by sustained unrest, with long simmering social contradictions boiling over. On the other side, China presents a vastly different picture over the same period. Nationwide cross regional trips reached 2.144 billion over the seven day National Day holiday, bringing the combined figure for the Mid Autumn and National Day holidays close to 2.8 billion as people traveled across the country. In September, China's consumer price index (CPI) rose by just 0.9 percent year on year, while food prices actually fell by 1.7 percent. The world is in turmoil, yet ordinary Chinese people can still plan trips and live their lives with peace of mind. Many are asking why the global crises unfolding elsewhere seem to have limited impact on China. The answer is straightforward: It's not that the storm has automatically veered off course; it's that we have preemptively shielded people's livelihoods from these risks. Since 2014, the China-Fiji Juncao Technology Demonstration Center has carried out three phases of technical assistance projects. To date, it has organized 67 training sessions, trained more than 2,900 local technicians, promoted Juncao cultivation on over 2,500 hectares of land, and helped more than 3,500 households achieve sustained income growth. The Juncao technology was developed in China and introduced to Fiji more than a decade ago. Originally designed as a substrate for cultivating edible mushrooms, Juncao has since become a tool for restoring degraded land, supporting livestock farming and creating new sources of income for rural communities.

The future is here | Where city and nature coexist in China's smallest reserve Nestled amid the hustle and bustle of Shenzhen, a metropolis in south China's Guangdong Province, the Futian Mangrove Nature Reserve is China's only national nature reserve located in the heart of a city and serves as a vital stopover along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway. Spanning 367 hectares, the mangrove wetland is home to 273 bird species, including 60 under national protection. In 2026, 341 black-faced spoonbills — out of a global population of just 7,746 — were recorded here, accounting for 4.4% of the world’s total. To protect this precious habitat amid urban development, the reserve employs digital technologies such as AI-powered bird recognition, drone patrols, and intelligent sluice gate control, demonstrating how urban life and nature can coexist and thrive in harmony.
