Nice story in NYT on the growing affordability crisis. My only nit was the takeaway, which failed to explore whether any of the price hikes in healthcare, concert tickets, skiing, or other industries assessed here could be attributed to monopolization or price fixing. The authors blame rising child care prices on workers (sigh), ignoring private equity roll-ups of child care centers.

BioWare’s 31-year RPG legacy has been wiped out overnight. EA executed a $55 billion buyout, then fired 400 workers. The corporate playbook never changes: massive paydays for executives at the top, the axe for the people who actually built the products.

Private equity investors and other companies increasingly control youth sports leagues. No kid should be shut out of sports because of price gouging or greed. xitter.cf/MorePerfectUS/status/2…
NEW: Youth sports is now costing parents as much as $25,000 a year. Private equity and corporations are turning a childhood pastime into something only the wealthy can afford. Youth sports has become a $40 billion industry, and the steep costs are crushing American families.

Shoutout private equity! Improving our healthcare system as always 👏
The U.S. has lost more than 24,000 hospital beds over the past 15 years. At the same time, the population has grown by more than 30 million people. And it’s not just a rural problem: rural and urban hospitals closed at the same rate, per Bloomerg.

“I still am living in a mold infestation covered with white paint, and I am tired of it. It shouldn’t be this hard to ensure your tenants are safe, especially as a billion-dollar company. While Greystar’s profits grow and grow, our apartments continue to fall apart, and they don’t address it. When will our health matter more than their wealth?” pestakeholder.org/news/greys…

This is insane. Private equity owning municipal utilities? How in the world?
My uncle noticed his monthly water and sewage bill jumped from $85 to $290 over the last six months, even though his family didn't fill a single pool or leak a gallon. He called the municipal water board to report what he assumed was a meter error. The clerk explained that the city sold the local water treatment facility and underground main grid to an infrastructure equity fund last year to cover municipal budget deficits. When my uncle asked why that tripled his rate, she told him: "The private operator added a quarterly 'grid modernization surcharge' and an 'infrastructure maintenance access fee' to every residential account." Nothing about the pipes, pressure, or water quality improved. Private equity isn't just buying houses and daycares anymore. They are acquiring local utility monopolies so they can bill working families a mandatory tax on drinking water and flushing the toilet.

NEW: The Trump admin is using AI to analyze Medicare prior authorizations, and companies get 25% of the "savings" the system generates. We found Carlyle Group and Patient Square Capital, private equity firms, backing this process. It's the latest oligarch attack on healthcare.

EQT is another example of private equity investing in both utilities/power generation and the data centers that will use that power
A new data center proposed by EQT in Hancock County, Indiana would use 798 MW of power and need at least $115 million in transmission upgrades, according to a WVPA submission. An EQT fund is also part of the consortium that is buying AES. Private equity is gobbling up Indiana.

My sister's longtime dentist practice got bought out by a private equity-backed dental group four months ago. Same office. Same hygienists. Same chairs. Zero new equipment. Last week they sent the new fee schedule for anyone with insurance. A routine cleaning that used to run $120 is now billed at $310, with the group quietly dropping several insurance plans they used to accept. When patients asked why, the new regional manager gave a scripted line about "aligning with market standards." Private equity figured out the same trick everywhere. They're buying up the things you can't opt out of: dental, veterinary care, urgent care, hospice, because they know you can't just skip your kid's cavity or your dog's surgery. This isn't inflation. It's leveraged debt getting loaded onto places you have no choice but to keep paying.

Digital Realty has a $7 billion joint venture with Blackstone, the private equity firm that also backs the utility NIPSCO in the state.
Update: After @cacindiana broke the news about a 300 MW data center coming to Kokomo, the mayor announced the project and identified Digital Realty as the company behind it. Throughout 2026, Kokomo elected officials denied any data center project was coming to this spot. 🤨

The Trump SEC is following the DOL in seeking to bail out private equity by opening 401(k)s to more private market investments. As PE underperforms and sits on over 30,000 unsold companies, the push raises serious questions about whether its risks are being shifted onto workers’ retirement accounts. pestakeholder.org/news/trump…
