امير سامانی از بخارا به هرات می رود و طوری دل بسته هرات و آب و هوای آنجا می شود که سفرش چهار سال به درازا می کشد
همراهانش که دلتنگ خانواده و همسران و یاران خود شده اند، از رودکی خواهش می کنند از جادوی شاعرانه استفاده کند و با شعر مؤثری امیر را به بخارا بکشاند
رودکی بوی جوی مولیان را می سرايد و آن را در بزم امیر با نوای چنگ و آوازی خوش می خواند و امیر را طوری تحت تأثير قرار می دهد که پای برهنه سوار بر اسب می شود و به سوی بخارا می تازد و نقل است که تا منزلگاه دو فرسنگی کفش هایش را به دنبال او می بردند
