Franklin Templeton is one of the largest money managers in the world, and it already runs a spot bitcoin fund. On October 22 it registered two new funds to trade on Nasdaq. One follows the 500 largest US companies, the other follows the 100 largest Nasdaq companies outside finance. Here is the twist. Each fund starts at 95% stocks and 5% bitcoin, and every dividend those companies pay is reinvested into bitcoin at the next market open, so the bitcoin share grows over time. To keep it balanced, any bitcoin share above 5% gets trimmed back to 4.5% every quarter. Holders never need a wallet or an exchange account. The paperwork takes effect October 27, but trading has not started and no launch date has been announced yet. A classic stock fund, quietly learning to save in bitcoin 🧡

The Bitcoin whitepaper is the nine page paper Satoshi Nakamoto shared on October 31, 2008. It describes digital cash that moves person to person, with no bank in the middle. In April 2023, blogger Andy Baio was trying to fix his printer when he spotted a copy tucked inside macOS. The 184 KB file, named simpledoc.pdf, sat in a hidden test tool for the Image Capture app called Virtual Scanner II. It had shipped with every version from Mojave in 2018 through Ventura 13.3, and almost nobody had ever noticed. Apple never explained the choice, and a few weeks later the file was gone in a Ventura 13.4 beta. For five years, Mac after Mac carried the blueprint for bitcoin without knowing it. And next Saturday, October 31, that little paper turns 18 🎂
