Benjamin Moser, author of Anti-Zionism: A Jewish History, told Rashid Khalidi that his 80-year-old mother, who had all but called him a Hamas member, apologized after reading his book: “I’m ashamed I ever said I was a Zionist.” His book traces Jewish opposition to Zionism over the past century and challenges their exclusion in discussions over Palestine. “No, you don’t get to set the rules anymore. We’re setting the rules now,” Moser said. Khalidi added that he had never seen so many people change their views so rapidly, noting that major publishers are now embracing books on Palestine that would have been virtually unpublishable just three or four years ago.

A grim snapshot of Palestinian life in the West Bank - that we witnessed over a week: - Settlers besieging a family in their own home - Israeli authorities demolishing Palestinian properties - Settlers repeatedly attacking farmers, even beating to death more than a dozen lambs - Israeli soldiers blocking the delivery of water to an isolated community Watch our full report here: youtu.be/lhRXrmg4_6M?is=NgRj…

“If those Palestinians hadn’t come and started throwing rocks, I probably would not have survived,” veteran Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine told Jasper Nathaniel after she was brutally beaten by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, according to Nathaniel. Speaking to Ben Rhodes on Pod Save the World, Nathaniel recounted the details of the October 16 attack on Palestinian olive harvesters, how Palestinian villagers risked their lives to rescue Levine, and how Israeli soldiers subsequently shot a Palestinian man and blocked paramedics. “Do Palestinians have a right to defend themselves through armed struggle, if that’s what it takes?” Nathaniel asked. “And if not, do you suggest they lay down and die and let their village get overrun and let Heidi Levine get killed and accept the fate that the settlers have in mind for them, which they will openly tell you is to wipe them off the map?” 🔗 Full interview linked in reply. @infinite_jaz | @brhodes

My analysis for @pressfreedom on Egypt’s unprecedented crackdown on the press, from jailing the entire Matsdaash newsroom to putting @MadaMasr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah on trial. I look at how authorities have turned journalism itself into a crime. cpj.org/2026/10/whos-next-in…

🇪🇬 Lina Attalah, the editor-in-chief of Mada Masr, one of Egypt’s last remaining independent media outlets, was referred to trial on Thursday. The escalation comes one day after prosecutors questioned her for more than six hours. Rights groups describe her case as an unprecedented attack on press freedoms in Egypt. The Supreme State Prosecution referred Attalah to trial on a charge of establishing and managing a website without a license. She was also questioned on a charge of publishing false news, but that charge was not included in her court referral. Atallah was released Wednesday evening on bail of 100,000 Egyptian pounds (around $1,800). She is due in court on October 27. If convicted, she faces a fine of one million to three million Egyptian pounds (roughly $18,000 to $54,000). The court may also order the closure of Mada Masr and the confiscation of its equipment. Over 100 independent media outlets and civil society organizations around the world, including Drop Site News, signed a joint statement condemning Attalah’s referral to trial, calling it “an unprecedented escalation that threatens the future of the entire independent media, knowledge production, and civil society space in Egypt.” Drop Site News and Mada Masr have co-published several articles over the past two years. Examples linked below.
🇪🇬 Egyptian authorities summoned Lina Attalah, co-founder and editor-in-chief of independent news outlet Mada Masr, for questioning on Tuesday. The summons followed Mada Masr reporting on violations of Egyptian prisoners’ rights. “Prosecutors have been investigating Mada Masr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah for three hours at the headquarters of the Supreme State Security Prosecution in New Cairo,” Mada Masr wrote on X. “Her defense team has been present with her throughout the questioning. The investigation session is ongoing.”

The news site @MadaMasr has been a light in the darkness of Egyptian and Middle East journalism for the last decade, and @linaattalah the shining star at its helm. Frightening and worrying that the authorities should be coming after them now.
Mada Masr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah was referred to trial on Thursday on charges of establishing and managing a website without a license. Sessions will begin on October 27, according to lawyer Hassan al-Azhari, Mada Masr’s legal counsel, who described the “haste” in the trial referral, which came just hours after the interrogation closed, and its scheduling for the coming week as “unjustified urgency” given the absence of circumstances in the case that require rapid resolution. storage.googleapis.com/madam…

1/2 To me, this is the biggest story out of Egypt today. @Linaattalah has pioneered independent journalism since well before Jan. 25, 2011. @MadaMasr remains one of its few surviving spaces. This chilling attack should give everyone pause.
🟠The Supreme State Security Prosecution referred Mada Masr editor-in-chief Lina Attalah today to trial on charges of establishing, managing and operating a website without a license. Her trial is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 27. 🟠The case, registered as Case No. 11743/2026, Fifth Settlement Misdemeanors, and No. 9072/2026, Supreme State Security, will be heard at the New Cairo Court in the Fifth Settlement. The prosecution accused Attalah of violating Law No. 180/2018 regulating the press, media and the Supreme Council for Media Regulation. 🟠Attalah received the referral order less than 24 hours after her release on LE100,000 bail, following more than six hours of questioning by the Supreme State Security Prosecution. During the interrogation, prosecutors accused her of running an unlicensed website and publishing false news domestically and abroad. 🟠According to Mada Masr, the questioning concerned its reporting on a wave of prison protests following the postponement of the new Criminal Procedure Code’s implementation. Prosecutors also asked about the outlet’s work and its efforts to obtain a license. Find out all the details via the following link: tinyurl.com/4jerka2t #مدى_مصر #لينا_عطالله @madamasr

Within the next 48 hours, if flour is not allowed into Gaza, all bakeries in the city will stop producing bread. We are facing an enormous catastrophe. Famine is knocking on our doors once again, and this time, it could be worse than anything we have experienced before. Please, do not remain silent! Talk about Gaza, make our voices heard around the world, and do everything you can before thousands of people lose access to something as basic as a loaf of bread.

Israeli forces arrested two Palestinians, a cancer patient and her daughter, on Tuesday evening as they were returning home to the Gaza Strip after receiving medical treatment in Egypt, according to a statement from their family and one of their relatives who spoke to Mada Masr. Seven people have been arrested from the facility in total since its partial reopening earlier this year, while the crossing continues to allow passage to only a small number of patients each day, leaving thousands waiting their opportunity for life-saving medical treatment that they are unable to obtain from Gaza’s decimated healthcare system. storage.googleapis.com/madam…

My solidarity today with Egyptian journalist @Linaattalah who went into the Supreme State Security Prosecution for an interrogation following a summons that neither she, nor her lawyers know the reasons behind. Now, we wait. This is the sixth case against @MadaMasr in six years.
Mada Masr’s editor-in-chief Lina Attalah entered an investigation session at the Supreme State Security Prosecution’s headquarters in New Cairo shortly before 1 pm. Her legal defense team was present with her. She received on Monday the summons to attend the session as part of Case 9072/2026. The summons did not detail the charges that Attalah will be questioned on. Today’s case is the sixth to be brought against Mada Masr, its journalists and its editor-in-chief in the past six years. The most recent was in August 2025, when the security prosecution released Attalah on LE30,000 bail after questioning her on charges of “broadcasting false news” and “using a website without a license” in Case 6182/2025.

Lina Atallah, editor-in-chief of independent outlet Mada Masr, has been summoned to appear before Egypt’s Supreme State Security Prosecution (SSSP) today for investigation in a new criminal case against her. This summons is part of a wider crackdown on independent media and freedom of expression. Egyptian authorities must immediately end all judicial harassment against her and Mada Masr staff and allow journalists to investigate and report free from intimidation, harassment or fear of reprisals. amn.st/6012BHVSF8
