I have ₦500,000 I want to put in Treasury Bills. The app gives me three choices: 91, 182 or 364 days.
I almost picked 364 days because the rate looked highest. Then I remembered my rent is due in 6 months. Locking that money for a year would have caused a cash crunch.
So before I choose, I check my calendar first.
91 days (about 3 months)
For money I'll need next quarter, like tuition or restocking.
182 days (about 6 months)
For half-year bills like rent or planned travel.
364 days (about 1 year)
For money I won't touch this year. It often pays the highest rate, but not always, because rates change at every auction.
My plan: ₦300,000 in a 182-day T-Bill for rent, and ₦200,000 in a 364-day T-Bill for money I won't need this year. My emergency cash stays somewhere I can reach quickly.
Remember: you pay a discounted price now and collect the full face value at maturity. Selling early means selling at the market price, which can be lower. I leave a few days of buffer between maturity and my due date.
