The EU is continuing to push for safe AI. But it looks increasingly unlikely that the big players like the United States or China will sign on to an international agreement. So why is the EU still pushing for a deal? Read the full story by @pedersschaefer here: buff.ly/zYIEkRa

Fact-checking is indispensable. But inherently reactive. Rebuttal of foreign information manipulation and interference often comes too late, and corrections do not always change minds, argues Farah Duquesne Weber, CEO of Sierra Tango. Democratic institutions need their own credible narratives, told in a human voice. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul's short videos, Estonia's cyber volunteers and Sweden’s Psychological Defence Agency offer models. With too much caution, Duquesne Weber writes, institutions cede ground and lose touch with the societies they serve. Read the op-ed: buff.ly/wq5XnmR

Amid weaponized supply chains and market distortions, the U.K. is not the source of the continent's challenges but part of the answer, writes Caroline Read, deputy ambassador at the U.K. Mission to the European Union. Brussels' Industrial Accelerator Act risks fragmenting production networks spanning the Channel, from cars and nuclear power to hydrogen, she argues. According to her, on the digital economy, "technological sovereignty should be measured by security, resilience and control, not simply geography and ownership." The EU, she writes, must work with committed partners so it need not choose between competitiveness and cooperation. Read the op-ed: buff.ly/zUJgFFl

Shut out of foreign markets, Russia is paying for its war with domestic borrowing, higher taxes and spending cuts. But Europe may run out of patience before Moscow runs out of money. As European Union leaders discuss support for Kyiv in Brussels, @Mij_Europe of @EurasiaGroup argues that Putin is escalating now to gain ground before his finances tighten further. The bigger threat to Ukraine lies closer to home: next year's elections in France and Italy, and member states' doubts over its EU membership. Read the opinion essay: buff.ly/ewVj4sJ

Donald Trump's AI accord with leading U.S. tech chiefs showed the industry's appetite for public-private cooperation. In an op-ed, MEP @EvaMaydell argues that Europe needs a permanent venue of its own, and that the European Council should host it. EU leaders and tech pioneers would meet every six months, with expert briefings, concrete commitments and accountability for delivery. "Decisions on energy, defense and investment are increasingly technology decisions," she writes. Read it here: buff.ly/rGKZObV

Is the EU becoming a club that attracts poorer countries? In an opinion essay, @FabianZuleeg and @StratulatCorina of the @epc_eu argue this is neither surprising nor necessarily a problem. The six Western Balkan economies account for less than 1% of EU GDP. One estimate puts the net cost of their accession at €34.5 billion over seven years. Treated as an investment rather than a transfer, they argue, enlargement can bring the EU a larger market, greater security and more geopolitical weight. Read the essay: buff.ly/99p4VbM

Is NATO ready to respond to Russia's hybrid attacks? The Alliance’s top commander, Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, think so, but he also wants allies to be more forthcoming. Speaking to the Warsaw Security Forum on Monday, he said NATO countries should let the Russians know that in case of hybrid attacks, “we can figure out who it is (behind)” and that coordination among allies is essential to ensure “a coherent response” about the Alliance’s red lines.
