My latest for @personalfinance ! Very excited for this article depicting how cultural narratives impact our ability to attain financial agency as South Asian women.
"I can recall several conversations with aunties in our community advocating that we younger South Asian girls just 'marry a rich Indian boy, from a good family,'" writes @ParweenMander businessinsider.com/personal…
I was featured in…@GMA. THE Good Morning America on my money saving tips & strategies. My mind is blown, the biggest interview of my entrepreneurial journey thus far ! goodmorningamerica.com/livin…

Well, folks, we've got it! According to your votes, here is the worst personal finance take of 2022 Q1:

Money avoidance, as explained by @ParweenMander, is "when we ignore managing our finances at all costs because it's too emotionally painful."

You are already stretched mentally and emotionally around your finances that you have less bandwidth than someone who has more financial security to say no to impulse purchases. That’s why you find yourself saying “f*** it” often. It doesn’t mean you’re bad with money.
If you’re someone who lives paycheque to paycheque and has debt - but finds themselves making impulse purchases even though you can’t afford it: you’re experiencing something called bandwidth tax.
So when we have our own money and we see the cute glass tumblr’s for our waters even though we have regular glasses, or the sophisticated desk set ups with notebooks, 20 pens and sticky notes - we want it and we allow ourselves to enjoy buying things for aesthetic or fun.
Being a “material” girl means something different to those of us who grew up as 1st gen daughters. Our parents only bought things for necessities & money was spent and used for surviving - so we didn’t experience having aesthetic things for no reason.
Happy #InternationalWomensDay especially to all of my fellow brown girls who are buying their own condos, negotiating their salaries, learning about money, not afraid to talk about money, investing and taking their iron pills - keep going. You’re breaking generational cycles.
So excited to share my first article with @Grow_mag ! Thank you to @NinaZipkin for the support in making this happen! google.com/amp/s/grow.acorns…

Over the next days and weeks, people in the West will be concerned about their stocks and crypto tanking.
Pls be thoughtful - there is a war happening right now. Our portfolios will be okay. I pray for Ukrainians 😢
As brown girls we were taught that our ticket to freedom is through marriage. Get a house when you’re married, go on trips when you’re married etc. So when you’re financially stable & have the means to do these things ALONE anyways - we’re still prohibited & not empowered.
As a millennial trying to purchase her first home, it’s become clear that simply working hard & saving money isn’t enough in today’s market. You need your parent’s help or a large windfall of money. But sure, blame my spending on lattes instead of systemic issues.
My latest for @BusinessInsider all about mistakes I see client’s make when trying to set money goals!
businessinsider.com/personal…
Not to mention having to dip into the fund because an actual emergency comes up, further delaying the end goal. BUT an emergency fund is crucial, I just want to get away with how it’s taught to be an easy thing to complete. There’s 0 shame if it takes you longer.
Hard truths about traditional personal finance advice no one’s talking about: how long it actually takes to build a 3 month emergency fund. For some of my clients it can be 1.5-2 years, yet it’s advice that gets thrown out casually that this is step 1.
Very cool to have written my first piece for @BusinessInsider @StrategyInsider !

Thanks to @PriyaSam for having me on her podcast!
"When we think about money... we’re not thinking about emotions and how our nervous system may impact spending...there's a lot more to finances.”
Money comes up a lot at this time of year and I loved @ParweenMander's perspective.
