ALT Diagnosing serious large bowel diseases like colitis, Crohn’s, and cancer involves examining tissue samples (biopsies) from endoscopic camera examinations. Large bowel biopsies account for approximately 10% of laboratory workload, with 30-40% yielding normal results. Currently, pathologists manually inspect microscope slides, but digital scanning is becoming more common. The COBIx algorithm utilizes digitization to analyze biopsy images for irregularities indicating disease. This project aims to optimize COBIx and test it across various sites and cases to ensure consistent performance. Eleven NHS Hospital Trusts in England and Scotland will participate, examining 11,000 large bowel biopsies over three years. Results from pathologists and COBIx will be statistically compared to assess the algorithm's accuracy in distinguishing normal from abnormal biopsies and prioritizing cases for urgent review.
