โ€œFan artists can make merch and take comms but fic writers canโ€™tโ€ WE LITERALLY CAN I know 30-50 people who take writing comms you can physically print and sell fics you just have to keep it on the dl so you donโ€™t get sued to hell and back weโ€™ve BEEN doing this

Found an interesting, if long winded substack that uses the Ao3 downtime happening at the same time of that HP fic being repurposed as a novel as a starting point to talk about the shift of fandom culture from gift economy to a transactional one

Writers are constantly saying they dont get enough engagement. It makes ppl who do engage (kudos, bookmarking, sharing) feel shitty. Ppl just wanted to dl fics for the outage. Everyone who was going to comment will go back and do that when its back up.

they're trying to have their cake and eat it. If you want your labour to be paid you need to start from scratch and write original fiction. Fanfic gives you a shortcut to recognition, as you immediately get attention from the audience of the original work without working for it.

maybe we should all get together and write down a full guide to explain fandom for all of the people who didnโ€™t look at fanworks before 2015

I firmly believe that one should write for oneself but fandom is built in community and interaction. It's not to become some kind of fanfic influencer or gaining anything, but to build community and have feedback. Just like any other part of fanculture fanfics need it. In order

also, the remedy to this feeling of exploitation on the part of authors is to cultivate a fandom community environment where the primary medium of engagement w/ fanworks is not ao3 comments! friends/beta readers reacting, circulating drafts or excerpts on social media, etc

ofc i understand where you and other creators are coming from, because that's the logic of social media platforms that function on an attention/influence based economy. but if ao3 is an archive, as it says it is, then you have to respect those norms.

Itโ€™s barely been one day of ao3 down and some of yall are already starting ridiculous discourse. Ppl downloading + sharing fics when the site is down is such a lovely example of community and is functioning exactly as ao3 intended: preserving access to fics.

My opinion on people downloading fic is that: if they intended to give comments/kudos, they would find a way to do so before or after downloading the fic. Writers aren't missing out just bc someone downloaded it to their private archive

lot of ao3 writers are starting to sound like those authors that lose their mind over pirating

i keep seeing people referring to fic drives as work being shared without โ€œrewardโ€ for the author and i have to be honest, it bothers me that people are posting on ao3 with their main motivation being recognition and reward. wanting comments and engagement is natural, but i think framing it as reward or a return for your work is kind of indicative that you donโ€™t really understand why fanfiction exists to begin with. fanfiction exists as a way for authors to express themselves, explore characters and identities and try things out. itโ€™s a creative outlet and you should be writing because you want to do it. not because you want the attention it brings. we lose the culture and motivation behind fandom practices when we commodify them.
Fic writers talking about โ€œengagementโ€ wtf are you on about

no shade but as an artist i think its insane to be against sharing via drive. it would be one thing if you earned revenue off ao3 and someone was trying to steal your income by reposting it and claiming it's theirs but THIS is something i cannot be sympathic about!!

for a while now i think younger fic writers have seen fanfic as a 1:1 exhange between a provider and a consumer and not community sharing. a lot of problems branch off that but that's the core mindset that is killing good fic/fandom
feels like what a lot of newer ao3 posters really want to do is make their fics only available in patreon sort of deal- where you have to pay for access to them with engagement and comments and kudos- and that's what's going to finally kill off fandoms completely

reminder to ALWAYS SUPPORT FIC AUTHORS. even while ao3 is down, many of them are on social media and you can find threadfics or their personal archives, as well as leave them comments and support!!!!!!
