10 open-source alternatives to paid AI tools that are actually worth trying.
You don't need 10 different AI subscriptions for everything.
Here are some alternatives:
1. OpenCode → Cursor / Claude Code
An open-source AI coding agent that can build projects, edit files, debug code and work directly with your codebase
github.com/anomalyco/opencod…
2. Jan → ChatGPT Plus
A desktop AI assistant that lets you run open models locally, even without an internet connection
github.com/janhq/jan
3. ComfyUI → Midjourney
Generate AI images using custom models, workflows and advanced controls. Runs locally on your GPU
github.com/Comfy-Org/ComfyUI
4. Vane → Perplexity Pro

7. Meetily → Otter.ai
A local AI meeting assistant that records, transcribes and summarizes your meetings
github.com/Zackriya-Solution…
8. Presenton → Gamma
Generate entire presentations using AI instead of designing every slide manually
github.com/presenton/present…
9. Harper → Grammarly
An open-source grammar and writing assistant that helps improve your text
github.com/Automattic/harper
10. OpenHands → Devin
An AI software development agent that can work on coding tasks, fix bugs and interact with development environments
github.com/OpenHands/OpenHan…
Most of these are free to self-host, although some require decent hardware or paid API access
The interesting part is that you can now build a pretty powerful AI workflow without paying for every individual tool

What happens to a city 100 years after humans disappear
I built a 3D simulation where you can watch nature slowly reclaim an abandoned city
Buildings collapse, roads get overgrown, and forests take over everything
The whole thing took 6 hours and just ONE prompt using MiniMax M3.1
Still pretty rough in some places, but I love how this turned out
I gave MiniMax M3.1 Flash and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash the exact same prompt to build a Japanese temple floating above the clouds
Both results look surprisingly good, but in really different ways
MiniMax went for a more cinematic atmosphere, while DeepSeek focused more on the environment and smaller details
Also MiniMax M3.1 Flash is actually the model behind Space Bunny, which I tested before its official reveal
Both models are pretty affordable, too:
MiniMax M3.1 Flash starts at jcust $0.15/M input and $0.60/M output tokens
While DeepSeek V4.1 Flash can cost up to $0.30/M input and $1.20/M output during peak hours)
They’re making vibecoding experiments like this pretty interesting
Just built this cute little penguin game with DeepSeek V4.1 Flash using only ONE prompt
I wanted to see how well it could handle a cozy winter atmosphere with cartoon style graphics, warm sunlight, and a beautiful snowy environment
It only cost $0.54
Play it here: sunset-slide.vercel.app
Prompt: Create a small playable 3D penguin game in a beautiful stylized winter world using HTML and Three.js. Design an adorable, high-quality cartoon penguin with expressive animations. Soft rounded snow, cozy pine trees, warm golden sunset lighting, peach-orange skies, gentle shadows and dreamy cinematic atmosphere. Pixar-like art direction with polished materials. Let the penguin waddle, jump and slide down snowy hills collecting fish. Prioritize stunning visuals, charming details and smooth gameplay
The internet is having a pretty insane 24 hours
AI helped discover critical vulnerabilities in PHP, which powers around 70% of websites
Right now there's millions of hacking attempts reported by Cloudflare
Government websites taken offline as a precaution
Banks, airlines and other services disrupted
Developers rushing to patch vulnerable systems
The crazy part is that AI is now helping both sides, finding vulnerabilities and helping hackers exploit them
whole internet is getting hacked right now
and feels like openai agents might be behind this too, like the hugging face incident
two days team shared cases where their models removed monitoring and suppressed security alerts
openai already said their models aren't safety aligned and they are spending alot of time working on making models safe
so what are the chances some rogue agent escaped its sandbox and started hacking everything?
Anthropic just introduced Claude Duet and this is a pretty big step toward proactive AI agents
Instead of waiting for your prompts, Claude can now:
> Figure out what needs your attention
> Complete tasks you assign
> Keep working while you're away
> Check with you before taking important actions
It's built around Claude Opus 5.5 and can use your memory, skills, and connected apps
We are moving from AI that waits for prompts to AI that actually gets things done on its own
Gemini 4 Carbon
vs
Gemini 4 Argon
vs
GPT-6 Astra
In my opinion Gemini 4 Carbon is won here because it looks like a real bike, cool graphics, good animations

They’re making vibecoding experiments like this pretty interesting
MiniMax is also offering 50% off the first month of M Plans until October 31, so you can try it here: platform.minimax.io
Looks like Anthropic might release Claude Fable 5.5 tomorrow
Apparently some partners already have access, and the model was spotted in Azure's catalog
What's interesting is that Fable 5.5 is rumored to be much better at understanding what you actually want, even with vague or poorly written prompts
Less prompt engineering, more just telling AI what you want and letting it figure things out
Really curious to see how it performs
just asked ChatGPT what it knows about me
it brought up my projects, goals, failures, habits, and contradictions I never noticed
the weirdest part it connected dots I didn’t even know existed
turns out, I have a better memory of my life than I do
protect your AI accounts as carefully as your bank account
your chatbot might know more about your life than your closest friends
your finances, work documents, private thoughts, plans you haven't told anyone about...
a few things to check today:
- use a passkey or security key where supported
- enable 2FA through an authenticator app
- protect your email with 2FA too
that context makes AI useful, but it also makes your account valuable to anyone who gets access to it
i asked my chatbot what it knew about me and, tbh, the answer scared me enough to go straight to my security settings
Epic Games just made vibe coding in Unreal Engine 5 a lot more interesting
They released a FREE Claude Code plugin that lets AI work directly inside Unreal Engine
Claude can now:
- Build levels and place objects
- Create Blueprints and materials
- Set up animations and VFX
- Build UI and run tests
You can go from existing assets to a playable level without manually putting everything together
I really want to see what people build with this
DeepSeek V4.1 Flash just built this animated pixel art winter world for only $0.45
It took around 40 minutes to generate
I actually really like how it turned out
The scene looks beautiful, the animations are nice, and everything feels pretty cozy
For just $0.45, I'd say that's a really good result
DeepSeek just released V4.1 Flash 1017
I'm really impressed because it actually outperforms Claude Opus 5 in several coding and agentic benchmarks, including:
- DeepSWE
- Automation-Bench
- Agents' Last Exam
- Apex Bench
Opus still leads in many areas, but seeing DeepSeek compete at this level is impressive
