They punished him for ... get this ... mismanagement of governance, tyranny, cruelty, and mass enslavement. The people who actually supported him seem to have cared. There's no debate on when people discovered Asia. No argument over who discovered Europe. Nobody tries to challenge the discovery of Africa. The discovery of South America isn't a topic. The reason the "discovery of America" is kept as a debate in the US and people want to force a celebration of Columbus has only one reason, and yes, it's the history of racism.
