Nigeria is set to partner with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) to reposition the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF).
According to the Defence Headquarters, discussions are underway with the junta-led Sahelian countries to revitalize the MNJTF, the regional military coalition established to coordinate the fight terrorist groups operating across the Lake Chad Basin.
The proposal was discussed at a regional forum that brought together former and serving MNJTF Force Commanders and security experts to identify ways to strengthen regional counterterrorism cooperation.
If the repositioning translates into deeper cross-border military cooperation and enables Nigeria to employ its air power against terrorist targets within AES territory, it could significantly enhance the campaign against insurgent groups operating across porous borders.
The MNJTF was established in 2015 to combat the Boko Haram insurgency across the Lake Chad region. Its original members are Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, and Benin. However, Niger suspended its participation after joining the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

JAS fighters claimed they attacked an ISWAP position on Lake Chad islands, resulting in ISWAP fighters fleeing. The incident happened last Saturday, 17 October, with the video clearly showing the JAS fighters running and shooting in one direction, supporting the narrator’s claim that “they (ISWAP fighters) are running away.”
The JAS-ISWAP clash has become a pain in the neck for ISWAP, contributing to the exit of fighters from the group. JAS, on the other hand, seems to enjoy going after their counterparts, as if on a hunting spree.

Borno State Govenor, Babagana Zulum has called on the Nigerian army to launch a major across the shores of Lake Chad to eliminate insurgents terrorizing Borno communities.
He attributed recent attacks on communities in northern Borno to the presence of insurgents around the Lake Chad and urged the military high command to expedite plans for the proposed operation.
This should be a no-brainer. ISWAP and Boko Haram maintain their primary bases and strongholds in and around the Lake Chad Basin. That alone should make the Lake Chad islands and surrounding areas among the Nigerian military’s highest priority targets. It should be the most bombed piece of real estate in West Africa.
