The Federal Aviation Administration was established by an act of Congress in 1935. But, in creating the FAA, Congress gave this regulatory agency an impossible dual mandate: Enact and enforce aviation safety… and promote the business of aviation. Therein lies the problem that has defined the FAA for over 90 years. How can you regulate an industry and promote it at the same time? This is a screaming conflict of interest. What happens when a passenger becomes violent on a plane? We’ve all seen the viral videos. But are unruly and violent airline passengers actually becoming more common... or are we simply seeing more of them? This week in The UPGRADE, I’m looking at what’s really behind the rise in disruptive passenger incidents, where the accountability lies, and what can actually be done about it. Also this week: * The surprising truth about America’s “best” airports * Why your cruise itinerary may be overcrowded before you even arrive * The airport baggage claim design that gets one very important thing right * And what I’m hearing from world leaders in New York during the UN General Assembly Plus, a question for you: Should airlines have an enforceable no-fly list for individual disruptive passengers? THE UPGRADE IS HERE. Join us at PeterGreenbergPro.com Ever since my first days as a journalist, I’ve been asking questions about travel. Not just to airline executives—but to the rampers on the tarmac who actually know what’s happening. Not just to hotel general managers—but to the housekeepers who know the secrets of every property. Not just to cruise ship captains—but to the harbor pilots who see everything at sea level. And after all those questions, I’ve learned something: The most useful travel information usually isn’t in the headline. It’s in the conversation behind it. That’s what The Upgrade is about. Not more lists of "the best" of anything. Not another list of places you should visit because they're considered "hot." It’s about the questions that aren’t being asked. The answers you may not find anywhere else. The insider information, reporting, interviews, investigations, and lessons I’ve learned from being on the road for more than 23 million miles. And today, for the first time, I’m opening that conversation to you. FREE Get a preview of each edition of The Upgrade. PRO Get full access to the newsletters, articles, reporting, interviews, investigations, and travel intelligence. MEMBERS ONLY Get everything in Pro, plus access to our private community forum—and direct access to me. Have a travel question? An airline problem? A complicated itinerary? A hotel issue? Something you’re trying to figure out and don’t know who to ask? Bring it to me. Because after all these years as a road warrior, I’ve learned something else: I don’t always have the answer. But I know the questions to ask. And to whom. Today is the beginning of a new conversation. This week’s broadcast of Peter Greenberg Worldwide is from the Bellagio during Virtuoso Travel Week in Las Vegas. I report on the devastating and fatal, raging flood waters that killed so many in Nepal, and on the passing of Dolly Parton, with whom I did a television special. petergreenberg.com/2026/08/2…
