"A PhD really is a rollercoaster – full of ups and downs. I’ve come out of a down and I’m on an up. I often wonder how life would be if I’d accepted the shark PhD. Maybe it would be easier, or harder, or just different. Either way, I know now I’m so lucky to have my dream job."

"I started running for the first time in Southampton, when before, running was something completely unbearable for me. I've started challenging myself and running taught me we can do everything – we just need to believe in ourselves, fight and pursue our goals."

"Bottom line: If you see a path that you enjoy and you can manage things to make it plausible, go for it! As long as you're having fun, the ride itself is reason enough to do it."

"After graduating, I went on tour with Brass Band Without Borders for a year, we travelled to Nepal, Madagascar & Colombia for an amazing human & musical experience. Coming back to a more conventional life was not easy, but I still had in mind that I wanted to work in research."

"I have to admit that as a science fiction fan, Back to The Future inspired me to pursue a career in science, maybe it is pointless to mention it or even childish, but it is true, science is for making dreams come true."

"I’ve benefited from having a great group of friends who have helped keep me from getting too stressed out on those occasions when my code *still* doesn’t work, and a supervisor who has allowed me the freedom to experiment and investigate what interests me."

"I am the kind of person who never plans for the future. Nevertheless, World has treated me back kindly so far. I just don’t think I am any better than a plank floating down the river. And this river just guided me to PhD. Don’t get me wrong. I am the plank that does their job."

"Doing a PhD broadened my mind, and not just about engineering, but also about myself, politics, society, people, and more. Someone once told me "The result of the PhD is not the thesis or the papers, it is the human being." I think this is true."

"Who knew a child who used to be scared going to school every day would end up embarking on a PhD journey? It can be very rough and intimidating at times but when I feel low I think of all the years that I have kept moving on. The journey to be Dr. Bhuiyan is worth fighting for!"

"How can researchers communicate their findings to others without the skills to make ourselves understood? If we have communication issues, how can the world benefit from research? What matters most is respect, understanding & intercultural sensitivity in our words & behaviours."

"My PhD is between the Optoelectronics Research Centre and the Institute for Life Sciences. As an interdisciplinary project, it appeals to me greatly. The work I am doing lets me try apply the magic of physics to making people better."

"The more you read, the more the sea of knowledge expands, increasing your chances of drowning. The ocean of knowledge you are thrown into humbles you, forcing you to stay down to earth and approach your ambitions with a pinch of salt."

"Great motivation is required for someone who has never stayed long in a foreign country before, to fly 7500 miles away from his hometown and participate in a literal "breath-taking" quest for a PhD degree."

"Our feeding makes a personal record on our DNA! But what components in food are responsible for this? My curiosity drove me to cross the Atlantic Ocean to study at the University of Southampton."
