I may upset a lot of friends and former colleagues by saying this, but the youth sports system is broken in this country. “Elite” teams are not elite, “select” teams are not selected based on talent, and “travel” teams are for the parents to travel. There, I said it. #daddyball

At some point, baseball has to get back to valuing ballplayers and not just numbers on a screen. Give me the Freddie Freemans, the Buster Poseys, Hunter Pences, Pablo Sandovals, Michael Youngs, Ian Kinslers of the world. Guys who just flat out know how to play the game. Everyone wants to talk launch angle and exit velo, but what happened to valuing a quality at bat?” The 9-pitch battle that might end in an out, but forces a pitcher to show everything he’s got.
The guy who hits behind the runner, takes what’s given, or just refuses to give a pitcher an easy inning. Those at-bats might not look sexy in the box score, but they show up in the 7th, 8th, and 9th. Some of these dudes could absolutely leave the yard too. That’s the point. They weren’t one-dimensional. Somewhere along the way, we confused measurable tools with knowing how to win baseball games.
I’m not against analytics or hitting the ball hard, but there is an art to winning that you can’t fully measure. We need more guys who know how to play baseball, not just hitters, not just athletes, ballplayers. And I promise you, those dudes never go out of style

Red Sox scout Ray Fagnant recommended BOTH Cam Schlittler and Ben Rice.
Boston passed on them.
Then they showed up in Yankee uniforms and beat the hell out of us in October.
So apparently the scouting worked.
It's the part where somebody listens that needs fixing.

We’ve reached the point of summer where program directors try to justify their salary and the $7,500 player fee by posting how “lucky a program would be to sign Player X” after not making a call for the player all spring/summer.
Never fails, always the same programs.
Any college coaches recruit kids that are BALLPLAYERS anymore? If so, here’s a dude for you. He was valedictorian of his HS class also. No big deal.

"Injuries always get blamed on the number of pitches thrown. I think that's very insignificant compared to the methods by which the ball is being thrown."

MLB trying to sell us that college is the best place to develop players while I’m watching an 18-year-old who threw 5 innings yesterday come into a game today in a 2-0 count with runners on will take incredible sales skills.
