ALT PHOENIX- The Daniels-Sims Arizona Legislative Black Caucus released the following statement today regarding the passing of the Rev. Jesse Jackson. "Today we mourn the passing of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, a giant of the modern Civil Rights Movement and a lifelong champion for economic justice. Rev. Jackson stood in the tradition of Martin Luther King Jr. After Dr. King’s assassination, he helped carry forward the vision of the Poor People’s Campaign and called this nation to confront poverty with courage. He reminded America that civil rights must include economic opportunity and dignity. Representative Quantá Crews had the honor of meeting Rev. Jackson in 2005 at the Bloody Sunday commemorative march at the Edmund Pettus Bridge. She remembers the words he spoke to the youth that day, encouraging them to keep fighting for economic justice.

ALT Rev. Jackson built coalitions across communities and refused to let the nation grow comfortable with inequality. As a Caucus, we honor his legacy by continuing the work. We are forever committed to protecting democracy, fighting poverty, and ensuring justice is real in the lives of our communities. We extend our prayers to his family and to all who were shaped by his leadership. May we keep lifting our voices and encourage our neighbors, our families, and our communities to do the same."
