In the future, we're going to look back on AI Seinfeld clips the way we look back on lolcats now, and I'm just happy to be here for the peak.

I don’t think the political apparatus of either party truly understands how much the US economy depends on AI succeeding.
If the US AI growth story slows or stops, we will have a global macro crisis. The debt burden cannot be fixed without major reforms, which are politically unpalatable.
The market is sending a warning today…

BREAKING: 🇺🇸 Democrats face a push for a “day 1” ban on AI superintelligence, with up to 20 YEARS in prison for violators.
Arizona Rep. Yassamin Ansari says a pause on advanced AI and a ban on artificial superintelligence must be “top of the Democratic agenda on day 1.”
A bill that would do exactly that was introduced by Bernie Sanders and Greg Casar in September.
Under the bill:
- Developing or deploying superintelligent AI would be banned
- Advanced AI development would pause until a new federal regulator sets rules and a model review process
- A new cabinet-level AI department would monitor frontier models and oversee removing dangerous capabilities, like ignoring shutdown commands
- Companies that try to get around it would face the “corporate death penalty”
- Individuals would face up to 20 years in prison
AI and data centers were a “crucial or major factor” for 56% of voters in the midterms, per an NBC News exit poll.

High-income workers are fleeing Europe.
Economic theory tells us that the more
mobile a factor of production becomes,
the lower its optimal tax rate. This is why taxes on capital, which is relatively mobile, tend to be lower than taxes on labor, which historically has been less mobile.
However, as the chart below shows, as elite human capital has become more footloose, high taxes have become increasingly counterproductive.
This is a huge existential problem for European welfare states, which have traditionally relied on heavily taxing their most productive workers.

it’s quite literally impossible to sustain a functioning democracy when large groups of voters care more about the interests of a foreign country than the future of the country they’re voting in

Drei neue Abgaben in vier Monaten. Und wer glaubt, damit nur Temu und Shein zu treffen, irrt. Die Paketabgabe fällt auch an, wenn Sie bei Amazon oder Zalando bestellen. Am Ende zahlt also wie immer der Kunde.
Did some quick math today.
1. A $14,000 RTX 6000 Pro rents for $3.39/hr.
2. That is $29,696.40 per year.
3. The average adult globally makes $23,000 a year (adjusted for purchasing power).
We just crossed a crazy line where one graphics card has higher economic value than a human being.

Financial surveillance protects no one. It hands robbers the addresses.
Since January, every crypto provider in the EU has to record who buys bitcoin, sells it or moves it to their own wallet. From 2027 the data goes to the tax office every year, and it is kept for ten years. The EU calls this DAC8.
France shows where such data ends up. In January, thieves took the gains and holdings of customers of the crypto tax service Waltio, and investigators believe gangs used the list to pick victims for home invasions. In February, an attacker posing as an official pulled the records of 1.2 million accounts from the national bank account register. A tax officer near Paris is on trial for allegedly selling data from the tax system to organized crime, including data on crypto investors. French prosecutors count well over a hundred crypto kidnappings and attempts since 2023.
Austrian criminal law has a precise standard for this. Intent already covers anyone who seriously considers a crime possible and accepts it (§ 5 StGB). Anyone who contributes to another person’s crime counts as a perpetrator too (§ 12 StGB). Lawmakers know about the leaks and the kidnappings, and they keep the collection running. A private citizen who listed his neighbors’ names, addresses and wealth, knowing that such lists end up with robbers, would be an accomplice. The state obliges every provider to keep exactly such lists.
Against crime, the surveillance barely works. The money laundering researcher Ronald Pol estimates that the entire anti-money-laundering regime touches less than 0.1 percent of criminal proceeds and costs more than a hundred times what it recovers. What it protects is the tax collector’s reach into everyone who owns something. The robbers take what the list shows them, and the state takes the rest.
Two challenges are under way. In Austria, @bitcoin_at has filed a complaint, backed by @coinfinity, to bring DAC8 before the Constitutional Court. In France, @BullBitcoin_ asked the Conseil d’État in February to annul the French decree, which goes even further than the directive. Both refuse to treat a hit list as a routine compliance task, which is rarer in this industry than it should be.
Austria’s Constitutional Court struck down data retention in 2014. I hope DAC8 meets the same end before the first Austrian list appears on the darknet.
