New @CSIS @AustraliaChair article by @WarintheFuture. One of the most important elements of modern warfare is “fast following”-the deliberate practice of observing an innovation proven by someone else, then copying, improving, and fielding it at speed. @WarintheFuture here on rebuilding a Western edge in learning & adaptation through the systemic incorporation of fast following: csis.org/analysis/fast-follo…

A number of good reasons offered in this article to cast doubt on the transfer of Virginia-class submarines to Australia. Yet it's all couched in curiously upbeat terms... theaustralian.com.au/special…

Australia's per capita economy is worse than it appears. As the composition of the population changes over time, children become a smaller and smaller proportion of the population. This effectively results in children being replaced proportionally by working age people, who overwhelmingly have jobs or welfare payments to fund their consumption. If you divide total GDP by the working age population, not the entire population, it presents an even worse picture of the last four years than the headline per capita figure. It also further reveals the gulf between the pre-GFC era economy when it worked for the average person and the post-GFC era where it really hasn't.

I’ve covered dozens if not hundreds of Trump rallies and I can’t recall him ever holding one in a room as small as this arena in Chillicothe, Ohio. It’ll be packed and loud- but maybe 1000 people will fit.

For the economic illiterates out there, here's the maths. Tobacco makes up 1.87% of the CPI basket. Based on ABS data, the price of illegal ciggies are about 70% lower than the legal ones. With around 80% of sales the illegal product, the actual price paid by smokers is around 60% lower than the ABS CPI figure 1.87 x 60 = 1.122 If the ABS had moved to use the actual price paid in September (which is said it will not do), tobacco would cut 1.12ppts from the CPI, so instead of headline inflation being 4.34%, it would be 3.22%
Fun fact: If the ABS used the actual price people pay for tobacco rather than the legal retail price, annual inflation would be approx 3.25. Sort of funny ay?. The ABS have a tough job, but smart folk should be able to look at what is really happening to inflation
