It's worth watching the 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐫'𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐥: 𝐀 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 from the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance's 2026 State of the Island Economic Summit. There were a lot of great points made, but Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog really stood out talking about how Vancouver Island's economy is larger than 3 other Canadian Provinces, noting that half our population lives North of the Malahat, and of course mentioning the rail connection to Port Alberni. Every time I think of games that were released in the 90s, I come to the same conclusion: best decade for gaming ever. I will die on that hill. Here's another reason: Colonization (MicroProse, 1994). Loading this one on a Friday evening was pure bliss.

The German tricolour is associated with efforts to establish democracy. The Nazis hated it. Yet it remains hard for many Germans to embrace. I found a different picture in Denmark where the Dannebrog is the "Hurrah-Flag" of the nation. ZEITGEIST on flags👇 katjahoyer.uk/p/why-danes-lo…

Trump ravaged conservative South with his trade war. In unexpected battleground state Mississippi, international trade supports 20% of all employment. Top destination for Mississippi exports? Trump arch-enemy, Canada.

It is probably the best book ever written on Canadian politics.
And a great opportunity to remind everyone of the apex Canadian political memoir. Erik Nielsen took no prisoners, entrenched no legacy and definitely sought no friends with this one. There's an entire chapter on how much he hated the media.

Came very late to his Sherlock Holmes, but now on season 3 can easily see why he's so often viewed as the best. He's climbed to number 1 in my view, used to view Plummer as the best Holmes but now he's 2nd.

The last few days are the brief, @davidellison. Patrick Stewart’s death did not produce a nostalgia spike. It showed that Picard still teaches people how to lead, how to listen, and how to hold a moral line without cruelty. That reach is rare. It is organic, it crosses age and politics, and it is not a campaign. People who agree on almost nothing still agree about Picard. The audience never left. The question for @Skydance @paramountplus @startrek is whether they build something worthy of that influence, or keep making shows that talk down to it.

Due to the horrendous violence afterwards, the First World War has been called the war that "failed to end". But why was that? This week on Reichs and Republics, we'll take a look at how the "German Revolution" of 1918 descended into terror and bloodshed. Ep34 is out now.

Canada’s new national security plan may have been the most important thing that happened last week, even though it received little discussion. Dr. Janice Stein is here to change that today. What is the plan, and how will it work? 🔊 on @CanadaTalks160, podcast platforms.

A whole different world used to exist, as AJP Taylor wrote about in his Oxford History of England: "Until August 1914 a sensible, law-abiding Englishman could pass through life and hardly notice the existence of the state beyond the post office and the policeman…He could travel abroad or leave his country forever without a passport or any sort of official permission. He could exchange his money without restriction or limit. He could buy goods from any country in the world on the same terms as he bought goods at home. For that matter a foreigner could spend his life in the country without permit and without informing the police…All this was changed by the impact of the Great War…The state established a hold over its citizens which though relaxed in peace time, was never to be removed and which the Second World War was again to increase. The history of the English people and the English State merged for the first time." If you want to learn about what the world was like in that era, if you want to know what sort of world used to exist, 1913 by Charles Emmerson is by far my favorite

Rob Anderson admits they want to“level the playing field.” The more the premier's office talks publicly about their blindly partisan motivations, the harder it is for them to make a case that the new maps provide effective representation for Albertans. globalnews.ca/news/12130025/…

For those interested in these events in Kyiv, a very useful thread from @francisjfarrell
I was one of the only foreign journalists present at this evening's clash at the National Guard facility in a suburb outside Kyiv. Here's what you need to understand. Long and difficult thread.
