And the stately ships go on To their haven under the hill; But O for the touch of a vanished hand, And the sound of a voice that is stilled! Break, break, break At the foot of thy crags, O Sea! But the tender grace of a day that is dead Will never come back to me. Tennyson

There is no point in modern ovens having digital clocks. You rarely see one with the right time. People only use it twice a year when the clocks change and the thing needs correcting. Nobody is timing their cooking on it. Scrap it.

Unpopular opinion: Ukrainians donโ€™t need another speech about how inspiring we are. We need air defense, electricity and a winter without funerals.

Noted democrat and constitutionalist weighs in.
What we witnessed yesterday in Warsaw was a blatant violation of Polandโ€™s constitution. I never thought @donaldtusk would sink to such depths as to stage a coup dโ€™รฉtat against his own people. I sincerely hope President @NawrockiKn succeeds in his efforts to uphold Polandโ€™s constitutional order. Our hearts go out to the Polish people.

The first game in NBA history wasnโ€™t played in New York, Boston or Los Angeles. It was played in Toronto. On this day, November 1, 1946, the Toronto Huskies hosted the New York Knickerbockers at Maple Leaf Gardens. Eighty years ago tonight, 7,090 spectators watched the opening game of a league that would become a global sporting giant. Technically, it was then called the Basketball Association of America. In 1949, it merged with the National Basketball League to form the NBA, which recognizes that Toronto matchup as the first game in its history. New Yorkโ€™s Ossie Schectman scored the opening basket. The Knicks won 68โ€“66. The Huskies lasted just one season. But their brief existence gave Toronto a place at the very beginning of professional basketballโ€™s biggest league, nearly half a century before the Raptors arrived in 1995. Thereโ€™s a Canadian thread running through basketballโ€™s story: Canadian-born James Naismith invented the game, Toronto hosted the NBAโ€™s first contest, and the Raptors brought its championship trophy north in 2019. Long before Jurassic Park, there were the Huskies. Did you know the NBAโ€™s story began at Maple Leaf Gardens? #Canada #History #Culture #raptors #canadianhistory #nba

Every time the clocks change, the no-change cranks come out, like Jill Stein during an American presidential election. I am old enough to remember when the US tried permanent DST, only to abandon it after 10 months.

That said, I couldn't care less if it were changed to a permanent time. It won't affect me. I get up when I need to, sun or no sun, and I don't have school-aged children to worry about.

It is interesting that the Regent Mall in Fredericton thrives, while most malls are dying or dead. I wonder what the secret is.

You can't write this sort of thing and live in the real world. It's fantasy role-playing, with MBC as the Masked Avenger.

So many people seem genuinely astonished by this local ceasefire in Oleshky, where Russian occupation and the fighting have driven the city into a full-blown humanitarian catastrophe. Turns out, all it takes is an order from the Kremlin, and Russians and Ukrainians stop shooting at each other. They can calmly and civilly arrange the evacuation of innocent civilians facing starvation, even allow Ukrainian and American journalists to be present on the ground, and so on. Well, duh. There is not, and never has been, a single adequate, rational, even remotely sane reason to wage a war aimed at destroying Ukraine. This is the stupidest, most brainless, absurd, pointless, contrived, and deceitful war in human history. The Kremlin wanted to give Donald Trump a little gift ahead of the elections, so the Kremlin gave an order to put the bloodbath on hold for a few dozen hours. All it would take is a single order from the Kremlin, and not only would a local ceasefire become possible, but the entire war would end. Just like that. Instantly. And 95% of Russians wouldn't give a single damn. They would happily accept absolutely anything as yet another "great victory of Russian arms," provided that's how state television explained it to them. And with a snap of the fingers, all those insane fairy tales about "NATO expansion," "Nazi Satanists," the "multipolar world," "historical Russian lands," and all the rest of that bullshit would simply vanish into thin air. The problem is that, in this insane, upside-down looking-glass world, absolutely everything is being done to encourage a megalomaniacal maniac, driven mad by impunity and boredom, to never, ever, under any circumstances stop the war, but to keep it going indefinitely. Instead, he is constantly appeased and rewarded for it.
