Watching my niece get married reminds me what life is all about. A new family is born and a new couple working together to do God’s will. This is the way.

Two+ decades of NAEP decline. What should change?

This post is more about policies of the school then it is about the people at the school.
Public school teachers are pulling their kids out of public schools. Why?

Traditional schools serve a very specific kind of student. If they don't fit that mold...they end up like this.

I used to walk home from school as a kindergartener, often by myself. What happened?
Even in the 1990s my mom had to fight with my elementary school to let me walk to school (less than 2 miles) in grade 4 and 5 because I wanted to, because I liked it. They wanted to force bussing, she said walking is good for kids. Moms know stuff.

Software built on a solid curriculum with AI analyzing every student response is the way to go. It allows kids to go at their own pace, but also learn more in less time.
Direct instruction is incredibly effective but never took off because it's boring for the teacher. Teachers, like all people, want to be creative in their job. The solution is obvious: let software do the boring teaching work.

This! School needs to change. Knowing how to read, write, and do math are important skills, but they should be taught in the context of a problem kids care about.
Elon Musk explains why school feels so boring School often gets learning backwards. Elon: "you want to teach to the problem instead of teaching the tools" Start with something real. Elon: "here's a car engine, we're going to try to understand how this car engine works. We're going to take it apart." To take it apart, you need tools. Elon: "along the way, you learn about wrenches and screwdrivers and all the tools that are needed" But that's not how school usually works. Elon: "we're going to teach you a course on screwdrivers and a course on wrenches. And you're like, why do I have a course on wrenches?" It's like learning to cook. A year of knife drills is torture. "Let's make tacos tonight" and you learn the knife in a day. Elon: "That would be like, say, a course on calculus without explaining what calculus is useful. And then you sort of forget it." Give people the "why" first. The "how" sticks.

What people are getting wrong in Sold a Story season 2. Direct Instruction is NOT scripted curriculum. Scripted curriculum can be direct instruction, but they are not the same thing. With that said, I am withholding opinions about the season until I finish it.

I have a new favorite AI tool. @bot is agents for dummies...and that is what I needed.

Teachers create assignments with AI. Students complete them with AI. Teachers grade them with AI. Here's what you told me needs to change in high school. 👇

In most states, you can do both. Part time homeschool and part time public.
Trying to convince our 13 year old son to drop out of 8th grade and do home school. He is totally bored and is ahead by two grade levels in math (takes afterschool math tutoring). His only objection, which is understandable, there are some hot girls in his grade.

If your child can't read, write, or do math, then what are grades even measuring?

This parents kid has been, pushed, slapped, and punched by another student all year. Now the teacher blames this kid. What advice would you give this mom?
