"Ungrading" means raising an eyebrow at grades as a systemic practice, distinct from simply “not grading.” The word is a present participle, an ongoing process, not a static set of practices. It’s dialogue, an active interrogation, assessment done with students and not to them.

As we get close to the end of the term here @OregonState the amount of assignments needing attention may accumulate. Some notes on feedback to bear in mind.
Moving late into terms, providing feedback (and on time) becomes challenging. Here are key things to keep in mind about feedback. GOOD NEWS. #teacher #AcademicTwitter #phdlife #AcademicChatter #Academia #highereducation @PODNetworkHQ @TeachPsych @OregonState @PsychScienceOSU

Why are so many faculty developer roles all about tech? I want to help with the deep introspection and intention that has to come before tech. I want to talk about our teaching how and why, before HTML. I want to co-create time, and space, and place, and care, for this cause.

Dear online educators, please add descriptions of students you’ve had who rely on online classes. Each of these represents a demographic of humans that F2F courses don’t serve (as well). Ex: My student who stutters & did her first ever prez she was proud of using asynch voice. …

I would say: Online teaching is still something that's new, and we're all learning as we go, students and teachers alike. You'll learn more if you and your students are learning TOGETHER. Make it easy for your students to ask you questions; listen, and you'll learn a lot that way

1/5 My unpublished letter to the NYT regarding its May 1 story about resistance to suspending grades:
Wildly unequal circumstances while children learn at home is a persuasive reason to suspend traditional grading. Parents who oppose this seem to fear that two things may happen..

1) Design assignments that rely on student experience and emphasize context. No busy work.
2) Talk to students. Ask when and how they learn.
3) Start by trusting students. Cultures of trust make space for honest conversation about struggles that may otherwise lead to cheating.
