5. People don’t care about you as much as you do
This might be a hard one for your ego to take but you’re not that important!
Enjoy the relative anonymity that being new affords you while you find your feet. Make mistakes while no one watches.
Couldn’t agree more. Part of the job of a PM is to advance the collective understanding of the team and this is a super effective technique in achieving that.
In my experience, the no.1 way to build empowerment in low-empowerment settings is to deliver when you said you would, consistently.
Get good at delivery and trust will grow. With trust comes greater freedom. With greater freedom comes more empowerment.

Earlier in my career I would get anxious about delivering bad or disappointing news, especially to intimidating senior people.
E.g. “there’s going to be a delay to our plan”, or “we can’t do {insert thing}”

…to let the data do the talking, rather than yourself.
That might seem obvious to some but it’s a very subtle shift in emphasis away from you as the protagonist, to something neutral and objective.
