لم تتخيل إدارة الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، حينما أرسلت قوة من نخبة جنودها من قوات "دلتا" و"الرينجرز" في اليوم الثالث من أكتوبر عام 1993، تدعمهم قوات الأمم المتحدة، من أجل تنفيذ مهمة بدت سريعة وسهلة، وهي اعتقال عدد من معاوني الجنرال محمد فرح عيديد في قلب العاصمة الصومالية مقديشو،
أن المهمة الخاطفة ستتحول إلى كابوس يُحفر في تاريخ وأذهان الأمريكيين، حيث أسقط المقاتلون الصوماليون مروحيتين من طراز "بلاك هوك" بقذائف الآر بي جي، ثم انقلبت شوارع العاصمة الضيقة إلى ساحة حرب مشتعلة، تطوّق فيها الميليشيات والمدنيون المسلحون الجنود الأمريكيين.
واستمر القتال أكثر من خمس عشرة ساعة متواصلة، قبل أن تصل قوات الإنقاذ.
وصدمت الإدارة الأمريكية بالحصيلة الثقيلة، إذ قُتل ثمانية عشر جندياً أمريكياً وأُصيب أكثر من ثلاثة وسبعين، وأُسِر الطيار "مايكل دورانت" قبل أن يُفرج عنه لاحقاً،
بينما كان المشهد الأقوى تأثيراً في الرأي العام الأمريكي، هو مشهد سحل جثث بعض الجنود في شوارع المدينة، حينها اهتزت واشنطن، وقرر الرئيس بيل كلينتون تغيير استراتيجيته وسحب القوات الأمريكية من الصومال في مارس 1994.
ولندرك حجم المعركة وتأثيرها في العقل الجمعي الأمريكي، يجب أن نعلم أنها لم تبقَ حدثاً عسكرياً وحسب، بل تحولت إلى رواية وفيلم، إذ خلّدتها الحكاية في كتاب شهير، ثم في الفيلم السينمائي "Black Hawk Down" عام 2001.
لكن يبدو أن قوة الصومال، التي استعصت من قبل على راعي البقر الأمريكي، لم تبقَ وقائعا بين دفتي كتب التاريخ، فاليوم، نرى المرأة الصومالية العنيدة، التي هاجرت إلى الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية في طفولتها، ثم اشتغلت في شبابها بسياستها، وقرر الشعب الأمريكي اختيارها لتمثلهم في مجلس النواب، فكانت نِعم النائبة التي تعمل من أجل مواطنيها، ونعم السياسية التي تدافع عن مبادئ الحق والعدل والحريات، ما أقحمها في مواجهة قاسية مع الرئيس الأمريكي الأسوأ بالتاريخ ، حيث شن الأخير ضدها حربا لا هوادة فيها، ما بين تصريحات رئاسية مهينة، تخطت مرحلة السخرية والسباب، لتصل إلى الاغتيال المعنوي، بالإضافة إلى تغطية إعلامية متحيزة، نتج عنها تهديدات بالقتل وردت إليها، ثم استغلال سيء لبعض مواد القانون، نتج عنها مداهمات أمنية لمنزلها وتفتيشه على مدار ساعات، ومصادرة العديد من مقتنياتها الخاصة، والتحقيق معها جنائيا بشأن تاريخ الهجرة لها ولعائلتها، وكان الغرض الأول من تحريك تلك القضايا ضدها، هو ترهيب النائبة وتخويفها وكسر إرادتها

Poor us, Canadians. The unemployment rate went up in October, and the economists were in for a surprise.
The Canadian economy lost 4,700 jobs. Economists had expected it to add 13,600. That’s a miss of 18,300 jobs. Rather dismal, wouldn’t you say?
South of the border, the surprise went the other way. The U.S. economy added 165,000 jobs, while economists were expecting, at best, 65,000. A much happier result, but still a miss of at least 100,000 jobs.
Now, before my economist friends object, let me say this. I’m an accounting professor who relies on economic theory to frame my research questions and on econometrics to test my hypotheses. So I’m hardly in a position to disown the dismal science.
I still recommend studying both accounting and economics. Just be careful about how much confidence you sell alongside your forecasts. There are more things that can move the bottom line than any model can capture. Give your clients the number, tell them what could make it wrong, and help them see the big picture.
The markets just closed and they erased all the gains they made yesterday. Hoping for better days ahead.
As I said before, the runaway costs of AI data centers were not sustainable. The profit-taking actions of taday just confirm that. The markets will calm down by tomorrow or at the latest Monday. Go for value stocks.

Those of us keeping an eye on our retirement savings are having a tough time today. And to think that only yesterday, we were celebrating!
Both Canadian and U.S. markets rose sharply yesterday. The Canadian TSX gained 809 points, or 2.3%, while the Dow Jones jumped roughly 1,500 points, or 3%. Investors appeared relieved by the decisive outcome of the U.S. midterm elections and the easing of political uncertainty.
This morning, however, much of that optimism has evaporated. At the time of writing, the TSX is down almost 500 points, while the Dow has fallen nearly 1,300 points.
One concern weighing on AI-related stocks is that the Democrats’ electoral gains could bring closer scrutiny of the rapid expansion of AI data centers, particularly their enormous electricity demands and environmental impact.
Am I worried? Not really.
For some time, I have felt that enthusiasm for AI has drawn investment dollars away from companies with established earnings and more modest valuations. If concerns about tighter oversight redirect some of that money toward these value companies (businesses whose appeal rests on proven earnings rather than lofty expectations), there could be a silver lining for patient investors.
We older folks could certainly use one!

She is of a Somali pedigree known to bow to none other than to Allah. She withstood racist attacks by the GOP. But she never blinked. She indeed disappointed them; she broke their heart😭
Her people are known to hold up their heads high with pride and keep their self-confidence under duress . She, like her forefathers, is resilient, proud, and true to Gerald Hanley’s description of Somalis in his book: The Warriors: Life and death among Somalis: The Somali feels inferior to none, not even to the White man. And that is how she did carry herself even after the billionaire-turned politician, the GOP, and fake Fox News attacked her from all angles. Let us say she inherited strength from her ancient Somali community but also put her faith in America’s rule of law. For all these reasons, she is our north star. We salute Ilhan and say her victory is our collective gain.

Do not despair. Your America—the one that welcomed you and that you love—is still there. You and your country are going through a difficult but temporary time. It will pass. Look at how the people of Minnesota and the rest of the United States supported #SomaliAmericans when they were down. This is a blip, not an equilibrium.
I am Canadian, and I love my life. But having the United States as a neighbor is one of the reasons why #Canada is such a great place to live, especially for people like me who benefited from an American education.
Yes, nowadays, whenever I visit the United States, I go through a “secondary” interview because my Canadian passport shows that I was born in Somalia. But I never worry. I just budget a little more time at the airport. That, too, will pass.
Many people around the world are also rooting for a happier and safer USA. We need the United States. It has led well in difficult times, and it still has the capacity to lead.
Be proud of your Somali-American identity.

AML MOU PROMISES IN KIGALI - WHERE IS THE TRAIL FOR $2.48 MILLION LEAVING SOMALIA?
Governor Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi and the CBS Board: you announce cooperation with the National Bank of Rwanda on financial integrity, supervision and modernization. Stop presenting an AML agreement as an achievement while fundamental questions about your own cash-clearance practices remain unanswered.
Start by answering questions about the cash movements your own institution authorizes.
Documents supplied to my office by a source who checked the originals show Tawakal requesting permission to export $2.48 MILLION to the UAE on August 8, 2025, followed by CBS and Financial Reporting Centre letters facilitating the shipment.
The letters identify the company, courier, amount, flight and destination. They do not disclose the detailed origin of the funds, the specific settlement purpose, the receiving institution or confirmation of receipt.
My source further reports that standard letters are routinely issued without a supporting shipment-specific financial trail. That allegation demands independent examination - not another signing ceremony.
Governor and FRC: what did you verify before issuing clearance?
Where are the underlying customer and transaction records? Who owned the money? Why was physical cash necessary? Who received it in the UAE? Was any onward movement documented?
The international standards are clear:
FATF Recommendation 10: customer due diligence and scrutiny of transactions, including source of funds where necessary.
Recommendation 11: records sufficient to reconstruct transactions.
Recommendation 26: effective AML/CFT regulation and supervision.
Recommendation 32: controls over cross-border cash movements, including declaration or disclosure and action against suspected illicit or falsely declared funds.
These are international standards, not a finding that a particular Somali criminal offence has been committed. But they provide a concrete test of your claims about financial integrity.

If supporting files exist, provide them to authorized independent investigators. If they do not, explain why clearance was issued and how that failure will be corrected.
CBS Board members: demand the records and document your response. Your duty cannot end with appearing in photographs beside the Governor.
National Bank of Rwanda, IMF, World Bank and AfDB: ask what this partnership will change in practice. Will it establish documented checks, reliable reconciliation and effective supervision - or produce more announcements while the alleged gaps persist?
Preserve the requests, approvals, compliance files, cash ledgers, declarations, custody records and destination receipts.
The documents establish authorization. They do not by themselves establish money laundering. That is precisely why an independent investigation must follow the money.
PUBLISH THE CONTROL FRAMEWORK. PRODUCE THE RECORDS. ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.

Friends, stock markets in both the U.S. and Canada are down today, erasing almost all the gains they made over the past two days. After listening to President Trump’s speech at the 81st UN meeting in New York last night, I expected the markets to lose momentum. So I was not surprised.
I have a background in mutual fund management and graduate training in business and economics. But surely President Trump’s speechwriters understand markets, too. Is it fair to wonder whether they anticipated this reaction, especially given the apparent slide in Canadian stocks and the loonie? Could this be connected to the tariff dispute between #US and #Canada?

Somalinimo is not only alive, it is stronger than ever. Wherever we are in the world, we have become a force to be reckoned with. We have acquired many labels and brand names: tough, organized, pirates, and even “garbage.” We are both famous and infamous. We exist, we are visible, and we know who we are: Somalis. What we still lack, however, is a strong system of governance in Somalia itself, where the majority of Somalis call home. We are still searching for a system that works. It will happen, but it may take longer than we originally thought.
