Solidarity to Newcastle Uni colleagues and friends - this is very worrying and will surely not be the last.
@ucuatdurham members - you have just had an email about a consultative ballot (a vote on holding a ballot) at Durham.
Please vote in it!

This seems like a good time to emphasize the relationship between the clemency power and Biden's legacy. As Mark Osler and I noted in September in a NY Times op-ed, Biden's pardon/commutation record is grim right now -- a historically low grant rate. /1

Hi @AbdullaAndalusi, we urge you to pull out of speaking at tomorrows Durham union society ‘debate’. There should be no debate on genocide. They are using your attendance to legitimise their event, sharing a platform which is not even remotely balanced.

Like many other VCs he will enjoy a goldplated pension that his staff went on strike to protect and him and his pals tried their hardest to destroy, cut and close.
Always good to remind them they benefit personally from our strikes when we win.
Never forget their hypocrisy.

In response to the angry replies below here are some more thoughts:
The fact that I am questioning the risks of this war does not make me an appeaser. Arguing for peace does not make me an apologist for Hezbollah or the Iranian regime.
( I have spent longer in Iran and seen more directly what makes the Iranian regime horrifying than my critics below…)
When I said that the Israeli attacks in Iran and Lebanon will make Iran feel forced to respond + lead to escalation this was a statement of fact not an endorsement of Iran.
• Both sides feel that they are not escalating - they are simply “responding” - it is only the other side who is escalating. But that is how escalation always works.
• The situation is particularly dangerous because the previous shadow war has been ended. Neither Israel nor Iran is now well-placed to predict the reactions of their opponents in the new situation.
If you are interested in engaging with the argument rather than banging a particular twitter drum please try listening to the full discussion on the podcast…
Some thoughts on Israel-Lebanon-Hezbollah-Iran in our latest podcast below - and why things are escalating in this way.
In particular
• The military success against Hezbollah does not = a political strategy
• Other Arab nations + many Lebanese hate Hezbollah
• BUT many Lebanese who dislike Hezbollah also hate an Israeli ground invasion of Lebanon
• Iran is forced to respond - because it is perceived to have failed to respond to weeks of Israeli attacks in Tehran and Lebanon
• Hence escalation

Thank you Aaron Fernando for this great piece about a phenomenal grad worker. @MomodouTaal deserves justice, and Cornell's discriminatory targeting of him as an international grad is shameful!
Cornell must bargain with CGSU-UE over the effects of his suspension! Get to the table
Momodou Taal, who is attending the university with a F-1 visa, was suspended after a September 18 protest under a new policy seeking to quash Gaza solidarity actions.

Since it is Paulo Freire's birthday, I want to remind everyone what he taught us: there’s no such thing as a politically neutral education, a politically neutral curriculum, or a politically neutral pedagogy.

Have a group project on your syllabus this semester? It's great for teaching collaboration, but it can also be ripe with racism and terrible outcomes for students of color if you don't sufficiently support groups. Learn from my mistakes (and research) 🧵

Trade union solidarity isn't just about strikes, jobs and pay.
Right now it is the duty of every trade unionist who can, to get out en masse to stop the far right pogroms.

26-year-old Kyle Clifford is being hunted by police.
It’s a fast moving situation and there’s a lot we don’t know.
But there is one thing that we DO know. And it’s depressingly, devastatingly familiar.
Three woman are dead.
They were killed in their home.
A mum, she was 61, and her two girls, 25 and 28, both in their twenties - that decade when you’re working out who you want to be and where you want to go with your life.
But for them, that’s now over.
A woman is killed by a man every three days in the United Kingdom.
That number has been remarkably consistent for the last twenty years.
Women are also much more likely to be killed by someone they know - two thirds of them are killed by a current or former partner.
“Domestic” – that word that somehow doesn’t feel adequate – because terror can also happen in the home.
Remember the three women killed at home in Bushey were still alive when the emergency services got there.
Yvette Cooper – the new Home Secretary – has said the killings are “truly shocking” – and she’s being kept fully updated on the case.
During the campaign, she said that violence against women and girls will be treated as a national emergency under Labour.
And less than a week into the job… three women killed at home. It certainly feels like an emergency.
