Kafr Qasim Commemoration Events in #Cambridge Cambridge– On 28 October 2026, the British city of Cambridge witnessed the launch of the annual Kafr Qasim Lecture Series, initiated by the Cambridge Centre for Palestine Studies (CCPS). #uk The academic event, the first of its kind worldwide, was held to commemorate the Kafr Qasim massacre, mark the seventieth anniversary of its occurrence, and reinforce the presence of the Palestinian cause in international academic and legal discourse. The event took place in person at Friends House (Quaker Meeting House) in Cambridge and was attended by a gathering of academics, students, and activists. The series commemorates the Kafr Qasim massacre of 29 October 1956, when Israeli Border Guard forces killed 49 Arab Palestinian citizens of the town as they returned from work under military rule. The killings coincided with the start of the tripartite aggression against Egypt. The year 2026 marks the seventieth anniversary of the massacre. The symposium was described as distinctive for several reasons: the mere fact of launching it under this name and holding it in England (the birthplace of the Balfour Declaration); the series itself bearing the name of the town; and the four main themes presented. The session was opened under the chairmanship of Professor Dr. Stefan Sperl, Academic Director of the Centre. Professor Dr. Makram Khoury-Machool, Founding Director of the Centre, was the convenor of the event and moderated the discussion. The programme featured four main presentations. Dr. Ayoub Abu Dayyeh discussed his book Jews Against Zionism: Voices for Peace (published in 2024 with an introduction by the Israeli historian Ilan Pappé). The volume brings together 67 Jewish intellectuals associated with post-Zionist currents. It explores the human dimension of some Jews’ responses to the injustice inflicted on the Palestinians, as well as the possibilities of decolonisation and sustainable reconciliation in historic Palestine. Dr. Emile Badarin presented his 2025 book Recognition Politics in Settler Colonial States: Normalizing Dispossession and the Elimination of Existence in Palestine. He argues that recognition policies in settler-colonial contexts serve to legitimise dispossession and the elimination of indigenous populations. The book also addresses issues of race, the error of equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism, and the need to strengthen the concept of Palestinian sumud (steadfastness). Professor Ralph Wilde, Professor of International Law at University College London (UCL), spoke on Palestinian liberation and international law, drawing on his experience with Palestinian cases before the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. He advanced the central idea that the foundational rules on which the State of Israel was established are illegitimate from the outset. The final speaker was the lawyer Dr. Abdul-Haq Al-Ani, who presented a legal analysis titled “A Decade Since the Launch of the Palestine 100 Initiative on the Occasion of the Issuance of the Balfour Letter (the Promise): A Legal Reading and Prospects.” He examined the legal legacy of the Balfour Declaration, its repercussions, and the prospects for accountability regarding events in Palestine and Iraq and their legitimacy. A question-and-answer and discussion session followed the presentations. At moments it was marked by particular enthusiasm, especially because the “ethnic-genocide” (al-‘irqabada) project remains ongoing and is deepening amid a saddening global political silence. “History in Suspense: Towards a New World Order” The latest book by the distinguished and veteran ambassador and author Michel Raimbaud! This Monday evening, 2 November 2026, a book launch was held in Paris for the new work by former French ambassador and lecturer Michel Raimbaud. The book is titled L’Histoire en suspens (“History in Suspense”), with the subtitle Un nouvel ordre mondial (“Towards a New World Order”). Published by Éditions Glyphe, the 480-page volume is the latest work by the seasoned diplomat, who previously served as ambassador to Mauritania, Sudan, and Zimbabwe. Over the course of his career he held diplomatic posts across the Arab world, Africa, Asia, and Latin America, including in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Egypt, Syria, and Brazil. In the book, Raimbaud examines the major geopolitical shifts currently underway. He argues that we are witnessing the end of five centuries of Western hegemony and the rise of major Eurasian powers led by Russia and China, amid what he describes as a period of upheavals, wars, and profound transformations that are shaping a new world order. The author contends that the world is living through a phase of “history in suspense,” in which the language of peace, negotiation, and international law is receding in Western discourse, while conflicts intensify in Ukraine, the Middle East, and Africa. Publié aux Éditions Glyphe, cet ouvrage de quelque 480 pages constitue le dernier livre du diplomate expérimenté, qui a exercé les fonctions d’ambassadeur en Mauritanie, au Soudan et au Zimbabwe. Au cours de sa carrière, il a également servi dans plusieurs pays arabes, africains, asiatiques et latino-américains, notamment en Arabie saoudite, au Yémen, en Égypte, en Syrie et au Brésil.
