"The West’s precious, almost unique, achievement has been the limitation of state power. Since Magna Carta in 1215, the West gradually placed constraints on rulers — through rights for citizens, independent courts, a sovereign church and the sanctity of private property." 1/

Capitalism involves far more cooperation than competition—think of the number of mutually beneficial transactions you’ve had today compared to the number of competitions you’ve been in today.
Capitalism has taught us to compete with each other when our greatest strength has always been our ability to cooperate.

Replying to @cafreiman
Capitalism is the system where businesses are made to compete with each other for the ability to cooperatively transact with you.

This shouldn't be unexpected in a well-functioning world, but it seems noteworthy that not only were the mid-term elections held, but they were administered without major incident, and the lopsided results are apparently not being questioned by those on the losing side of it.

Yesterday while I was at lunch, Claude deleted a year of con law lecture notes and my current syllabus.

Election Day, so I'm out here in the @nytimes providing information for the vast numbers of swing voters focused on mandatory #arbitration of health care provider/insurer disputes under the No Surprises Act. Free link nytimes.com/2026/11/03/us/in…

Must be AI hallucinating—there’s no such thing as a 1 point safety. 😉
Someone has gone their entire life without seeing a one point safety until now🔥

This is part of why Mayor Q is such a likable guy and skilled politician: his idea of a fun Sunday—what progressives would call his “lived experience“—has long immersed him among *organically* diverse groups of regular folks in the upper deck

When AI follows instructions, it’s usually very helpful. How do we get it to always follow instructions, or at least tell us when it’s departing from them?

40 years of globalization:
Vance: "If you are trying to undo 40 years of globalization, it's going to take time to fix that. You have a few tone deaf Republicans who say, 'Shut up if you're pissed off about a $22 burrito.' My response to that is... No. Listen to people who are upset with the state of the economy."

When The West Wing first aired in my 20s, I couldn't get past the smug-yet-shallow liberal policy lectures. Now, finally rewatching in 2026, I don't even mind that. It’s just refreshing to see (even a fictional) White House actually care about policy and behave like adults.

There’s no conflict between the view that entrepreneurs are entitled to their wealth and that babies should have food—in fact, societies that enable entrepreneurs to get rich via positive-sum market activity have well-fed populations.

FOX: You say you're a capitalist, what do you mean? El-Sayed: Capitalism is the process by which we enable supply and demand to allocate capital so that it's the most productive in an economy. We are not in a situation where we have capitalism, we have corporatism.
