Has anything genuinely new happened to Excel in the last 30 years? Anything?? I mean things people want, not weird things nobody ever uses.

Now I was always a VisiCalc kinda guy. But I moved with the times. I pivoted. I bought Lotus 1-2-3.

But did I really need to? Aren't all spreadsheets exactly the same and basically unchanged since 1995 when they added nicer colours to it? The spreadsheet is now a perfect Platonic form and no further changes are required or warranted.

'Lion tamer' is not hyphenated unless it is used as a compound modifier. You'd think the CIA* would know that. (*Cigar Institute of America)

Today in pulp... what happens when the internet dies? Do we go back to bulletin boards? Teletext? CB radio? Or do we just give up. Let me start up Netscape Navigator and give you a few thoughts... *dialing tone*

The current internet has had an extraordinary run. It has tested the idea of unmediated communication to the limits of what it can bear and beyond. It has also shown us what we look like when a screen separates us from each other. Is it a mirror, a void, or an abyss? But that idea was never meant to last. The 'series of tubes' will continue: patched up, creaking at the seams, staggering on. The data will flow. But the humans won't be there.

Something will survive for the humans who still want to be online. Private internets. Walled gardens. Subscription services. The doors will be guarded and your name will have to be on the guest list. Various Voight-Kampff tests will no doubt be done. Sic transit gloria mundi. But be of good cheer. All technology is transformative until it isn't. So the World Wide Web will pass the torch to something else and I will do my best to curate some bits of it before it goes. I don't know where it will go, but I know the idea lives on. Information wants to be free and there are enough enthusiastic people willing to build it another temporary home. We just need to stumble upon the abode. More stories another time...
