This is important - and staggering
Mis and Disinformation and AI. I downloaded a Qwen LLM (local model) and asking about Tiananmen Square events of 4 June 1989 was just bizarre - see photo below.

Quite brilliant demolition job of the idea that Palestine Action isn't a terrorist organisation according to the UK legal definition. This is how philosophers worthy of the name should be engaging in public debate. Full marks @QCassam for putting academic head above parapet even to discuss this with clarity of thought and aplomb. @acadofideas #BattkeFest @GBNEWS

A devastating reply to moral philosopher Jeff McMahan on the Gaza war, by Quassim Cassam (@QCassam). Frankly, I’m amazed—in a positive way—that Cassam managed to get this response published in an academic journal like Analyse & Kritik. He did face pushback from the editors, but they ultimately treated him fairly. Kudos to them. McMahan is one of countless academics who seem to have suspended their critical faculties when it comes to the Gaza war, and Cassam doesn’t pull any punches in exposing this. McMahan’s claim that everything horrendous Hamas has done has been done “to a much greater extent” by Israel is, Cassam argues, “not only false but ludicrous when the evidence is properly considered.” In his effort to downplay the sadistic atrocities committed on 7 October, the distinguished bioethicist even ends up parroting Hamas propaganda. This, Cassam rightly argues, is “the single most pernicious aspect” of his argument. From a moral point of view, nothing Israel has done during this horrible war even comes close to what Hamas did on 7 October. There has not been a single instance of Israeli soldiers executing women and children at close range, engaging in mass rape, abducting babies and the elderly, or parading mutilated corpses through the streets in jubilation—the kinds of atrocities Hamas deliberately committed that day. Hamas maximizes civilian casualties; Israel tries its best to minimize them. Yet the moral pressure on academics to toe the anti-Israel line is so immense that even a distinguished ethicist like Jeff McMahan can become blind to this stark moral divide. Worse still, he can end up pretending that the moral divide runs in the opposite direction—that Israel is “much worse” than Hamas. Thank you for this public service, Quassim. Not everyone in academia has gone crazy, phew. degruyterbrill.com/document/…

KEYNOTE SESSION ANNOUNCEMENT🚨 On the twenty-fifth anniversary of 9/11, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said, ‘terror still knocks on the door of democracy’, but that those who seek to destroy shared values ‘will never win’. Delighted to be cited in this superb speech by @Fox_Claire on misuses of the idea of misinformation.
This week I spoke in the Lib Dem debate in the Lords on foreign interference and dis/misinformation. Not sure they were too happy when I traced back the weaponisation of these concepts to 2016, when they were used to explain away and discredit Brexit voters. The elite war on misinformation is now being turbo-charged as panic sets in to contain a turbulent public who won't just acquiesce to PR versions of policies or be bullied by name-calling.

Excellent paper by philosopher @QCassam. It's very rare to read such an unflinching, level-headed analysis about the Gaza war in an academic journal these days! "Until now, wars have largely been fought on the assumption that: (a) it is possible to lose militarily without being totally annihilated; (b) in such cases, the losing side recognizes that it has lost and gives up because it recognizes that it has lost; and (c) there are limits to how much pain and suffering each side is willing to tolerate before it sues for peace. Even the Japanese surrendered at the end of the Second World War once the United States deployed nuclear weapons. In contrast, Hamas and Iran like to give the impression that they are fanatics who will not accept that they have lost as long as they are still standing and do not care at all about the wellbeing of their own people." degruyterbrill.com/document/…

For the philosopher Harry Frankfurt, the essence of bullshit was not the intention to deceive but indifference to how things really are. But does that make bullshit worse than lies? Are we not all, sometimes, bullshitters? By Quassim Cassam via @dubreviewbooks (link in thread)

Just finished The New Dark Age, the superb latest by @NigelBiggar. It should go without saying - but sadly no longer does - that the freedom to question, criticize, and test dominant orthodoxies is vital to the vocation of universities: the pursuit of truth.

Jonathan Hall KC, the Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation spells out what we have long been saying on tonight’s Panorama: the hate marches lead to attacks on Jews, the laws are there to prevent the worst antisemitism but they are not being used.

What is a cause in the context of terrorism? Following the TRIP Lecture by @QCassam last week on Extremism Without Politics, this paper jointly written with @terrorwatchdog considers the meaning of "cause" in the Terrorism Act 2000.

Surprisingly little has been written about 'cause' in this sense of the word. These joint reflections with @terrorwatchdog should be of philosophical interest as well as relevant to the legal definition of terrorism as having the purpose of advancing a cause.
