Brian May in the 1980s, relaxed in white. The guitar behind all those Queen solos was one he made himself. Brian and his father built the Red Special at home, out of wood from an 18th-century fireplace, with mother-of-pearl buttons and motorbike valve springs among the parts, and he still plays it with a sixpence instead of a pick. He also never forgot his first career: in 2007, Imperial College London gave him a PhD in astrophysics for research he had started in 1971.
