Gilbert Baker added a 9th stripe shortly before his death, with the new stripe representing diversity. He added this stripe in reaction to the 2016 US election. Itโs unfortunately not as well known as the 8 and 6 striped versions. Hereโs an image of him sewing together the 9 striped rainbow flag.

Hey world, especially LGBTQ community members. I am writing to inform you about the ongoing persecutions of LGBTQ people in East Africa by governments in East Africa that criminalise homosexuality. Homosexuality is a felony in all East African countries. This situation has given rise to a growing number of LGBTQ refugees and asylum seekers who live in UNHCR (@Refugees) administered refugee camps in the region.
I am one of the LGBTQ refugees currently granted asylum by UNHCR in East Africa. We live in a hostile environment, among heterosexual refugees who detest homosexuality. Most of these heterosexual refugees come from war-torn countries i.e. Sudan, Somalia, Congo, and they are staunch Muslims who are very homophobic and very hostile towards LGBTQ people. As a result, we face constant threats, discrimination, attacks, abuse, rape, etc. The rapists believe they can change someone's sexuality by forcing them to engage in heterosexual acts.
Since the environment is already insecure for us to simply exist, we can't work, especially the transgenders like myself. We were also rejected by our families and friends back in our home countries so we also don't receive any form of support from that end. The World Food Programme (@WFP), which is responsible for feeding refugees worldwide, is greatly underfunded and they can't provide us with adequate monthly food. The World Food Programme is providing each refugee with just $15 per month to cater for all their basic human needs. Who in this world can survive on $15 per month? We are also reliably informed that in our refugee camp, this little financial support will end by October.
This is HELL!
