Why I think "open the primaries" is a pointless reform effort. (link below)
On @nexton9news Rep Lauren Bobert said he biggest surprise upon entering Congress was that a seat on a committee has to be sponsored by a major donor. It doesn’t have to be like this.
Gerrymandering can be a thing of the past.
Lee Drutman breaks it down on Ezra Klein’s show today.

At no moment in American history has our winner-take-all districting system worked particularly well. There is no golden age of “fair districts.”
The problems have been different at different times. The antiquated voting system that produces them has been there from the start.

First-past-the-post hinders long-term policy by creating disproportionate majorities that swing between extremes, dismantling work of predecessors.
Proportional representation fosters stability because governing requires representing a genuine majority of the electorate.
Primaries raise the cost of running for office. Eliminating primaries all together would help to get money out of politics.
Here is a take of our current cluster jumble complete with a ‘reform’ suggestion to make running for office more expensive.

Here's what winner-take-all elections give us: safe districts where millions of voices don't matter.
Here's what #ProportionalRepresentation gives us: every community gets representation.
It's not rocket science—it's just fair.
How do we break out of the American doom loop?
Northern Ireland did it. @georgekcheung & @equitabledemo got the details. The film premier is streaming on St. Patrick’s Day (Tues 3/17)

Voter suppression (SAVE/MEGA) would be worse in Colorado because all (4.61m+) voters will have to re-register. Roughly 2m voters will have to pay a poll tax to get the required ID. Cost is varies from $20 to $185 and can take up to 6 weeks. #democracy democracy.io/#!/
A proposed a ballot measure to gerrymander Colorado to favor the democrats.
We could eliminate gerrymandering all together with proportional representation.

How in the world can the @nytimes publish an article on how other countries deal with gerrymandering/districting and not make the observation that most countries use proportional electoral systems that make redistricting unimportant in the first place?

Year after year, most voters have to guess the two front-runners and vote for one of them to avoid “wasting” their vote.
With RCV, they could simply rank who they love, who they like, and who they can live with to be included in finding the consensus of a majority.
Proportional representation builds fairness into the system of self-rule
Pick-one, winner-take-all has been the go-to policy for segregationists
The Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) act will nationalize elections (in violation of the 10th Amendment) to force the purge of voter rolls every 30 days. At least 21 million people will be disenfranchised this November if it passes.
Colorado’s full delegation should oppose it
Congress failed to pass the SAVE Act last year for good reason: it’s an anti-voter bill. But now lawmakers have revived it despite overwhelming public opposition. bit.ly/4qS8wBr

The United States shows what happens when first-past-the-post locks politics into two-party trench warfare. Small vote shifts create total control.
That is not stability. Proportional representation reduces all or nothing outcomes and reflects voters more accurately.

ALT Graphic showing Donald Trump speaking at a podium with flags in the background, pointing upward while addressing a crowd. Text says his Republicans won control of the House of Representatives under first-past-the-post and asks how much longer we should gamble with this system. Additional text explains that first-past-the-post creates exaggerated two party systems and concentrates authority in one party, while proportional representation supports a multiparty democracy based on negotiation, cooperation, and accountability. Pick-one, winner-take-all elections creates warring factions. Every item in the news turns into ‘evidence’ to spin. We don’t yet know what caused the Reiner family tragedy…but that doesn’t matter to the political outrage machine

Instead voters pick between the two most famous candidates. Most vote against the candidate they dislike, not for a candidate’s plans for when they are in office.
Gamesmanship makes politicians say things that blame the other side.
