Why Were 100 Colt 1903s Sent to Java in 1941?
This factory-lettered Colt Model 1903 was sent to Bandoeng, Java, just months before Japanese forces invaded the Dutch East Indies. Its documented destination places it at the crossroads of espionage, resistance, and the war in the Pacific.
Available for the first time in 23 years is a Colt Dragoon long housed in some of the most accomplished, most renowned groupings in all of fine arms collecting. A glance in its brass-cornered case quickly reveals why: superb condition and extreme rarity. The Dragoon is bathed in original, rich bluing, with a vibrant case-hardened frame and bright nitre blue screw heads. The case is filled with a full complement of correct accoutrements including one that makes the set particularly important to collectors.
Any Dragoon with a shoulder stock is rare, but for one to still be accompanied by its original stock, especially with this level of condition, is almost unheard of. However, a closer inspection reveals an even greater rarity, succinctly stated by its most recent custodian, Mr. Jim Eplen.
“At the present time, there are only two known authentic casings of stocked Colt Dragoon models. Both are English. Both are British proofed and both have 'Col. Colt London' addresses. Moreover, serial number 18209 has no finish, no inscription, and is housed in a standard oak casing. Serial number 18220...has almost all of its original finish."
Along with its NRA Silver Medal, awarded in 2013, thorough chain of provenance, as well as a detailed history regarding the presentation inscription on its backstrap, this is a Colt Dragoon worth its 23-year wait.
