DARPA’s N3 program funded research starting in 2018 into high-resolution bidirectional brain-machine interfaces for able-bodied users that do not require surgical implants. The stated target was reading from and writing to 16 neural channels within a 16 cubic millimeter volume in 50 milliseconds using external methods such as light, acoustics, or electromagnetic energy, or minutely invasive nanotransducers.
This follows established science on the microwave auditory effect, in which pulsed radio frequency energy can produce perceived sounds inside the head without external speakers. The program is now listed as complete on DARPA’s site, with public records showing research progress but no confirmed operational system meeting the full original performance goals or widespread deployment.
