Outsourcing is a racket. It's time the Labour government kept their promise to deliver the ‘biggest wave of insourcing for a generation’.

Further strike action called on Chiltern against driver-only operation on East West Rail RAIL UNION RMT members working as Train Managers for Chiltern Railways will take a further 24 hours of strike action next Thursday (November 12) as the company continues to refuse to provide guarantees over the safety-critical role of the second person on board proposed East West Rail services. The latest walkout comes amid growing concerns over plans to introduce driver-only operation on East West Rail, threatening both passenger safety and the existing Train Manager roles at Chiltern Railways. RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said that the union remained determined to resist any attempt to undermine safety standards on the railway. “Our members have already demonstrated their determination to defend the safety-critical role of the second person on board, and they will be taking further strike action while Chiltern management has failed to address legitimate concerns. “Driver-only operation represents an unacceptable weakening of safety standards and threatens the vital role Train Managers play in protecting passengers and ensuring the safe operation of services. “Chiltern Railways must stop ignoring the concerns of workforce and provide firm guarantees that safety-critical Train Manager roles will be protected on East West Rail. “Our members will not stand by while passenger and worker safety is put at risk, and RMT will continue this campaign until those guarantees are secured,” he said. A second person on a train is NOT the same as a fully trained, safety-critical guard. The East West Rail controversy goes to the heart of passenger safety. Having someone on board means little if they lack the training and authority to deal with an emergency. Keep the guard on the train.

Rail safety shouldn't be sacrificed to save pennies. RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey tells MPs the East West Rail dispute could be resolved for just 0.3% of the payroll bill. Protect safety-critical jobs. Protect passengers.

RMT welcomes seafarer’s charter SEAFARER Union RMT today welcomed the Mandatory Seafarers Charter aimed at improving seafarer employment conditions on international ferry routes from the UK. The Seafarers’ (Wages and Working Conditions) Regulations 2026 was introduced in direct response to the P&O Ferries scandal in March 2022 when nearly 800 UK seafarers were summarily dismissed and replaced by low paid agency crew. The regulations require operators of ferry services on UK-France and UK-Channel Island routes to pay seafarers at least the National Minimum Wage equivalent for all work undertaken, not just in UK territorial waters. Employers must also comply with maximum periods on board of 14 consecutive days working, or 21 days for those undertaking training. The union will continue to demand that the Charter is extended to all international short sea ferry routes that call at a UK port 120 times or more per year, as this is a sufficient link to the UK economy and regulatory framework. RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said that the union would continue to demand that the Charter should include standards on sick pay, holiday pay, pensions and other remunerated conditions of employment, as the Maritime Minister previously committed to. “We must have a clear commitment to extend the charter to all routes where P&O and other exploitative employers operate passenger and freight ferry services, and to include more conditions of employment for all seafarers working on services that call at least three times a week in a UK port,” he said.

RMT backs plans for greater control of the energy industry OFFSHORE energy union RMT today welcomed plans to extend employment protections and increase public ownership contained within the government’s Energy Independence Bill which aims to reform the energy industry. RMT general secretary said that the Bill contained a set of proposals affecting members in offshore energy and the maritime supply chain including the creation of a GB energy grid. “At present we do not have the domestic workforce to deliver energy independence and this legislation is the green light for job creation across the country and greater public control over our energy industry. “It is also a wakeup call to industry to deepen the work with trade unions to deliver the apprenticeships and jobs we need to fix the broken energy market,” he said.

RMT backs findings of Carmont train disaster enquiry RAIL union RMT fully backed the conclusions of the Fatal Accident Inquiry into the tragic derailment at Carmont in 2020 which cost the lives of three people and led to serious injury to others. The Fatal Accident Inquiry found that private contractor Carillion had been instructed by Network Rail to build a new drain in the area of the derailment, but it was not installed in accordance with the design. “As a result, the drain was unable to accommodate the flow of surface water during the intense rainfall in the area on 12 August 2020,” the inquiry found. RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said that Network Rail needed to move away from outsourcing renewals and maintenance works on rail infrastructure and bring the work in house. “This would ensure that work is carried out to the correct standard by trained staff with appropriate resources to ensure rail travel remains a safe method of transportation in Britain. “We also support the removal of the ancient intercity fleet of rolling stock involved in this crash as it is clearly not up to modern standards,” he said. Network Rail had already pleaded guilty to a contravention of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 at the High Court in Aberdeen on September 7, 2023 and was fined £6.7 million.

RMT’s new report 'Systemic Racism and Corporate Washing at @LNER ' exposes the dark truth about outsourcing. Not only is it a false economy that siphons profits out the railway while driving workers into in-work poverty, it also sustains systemic racism. publuu.com/flip-book/1025166…

RMT urges @LNER not to ignore ‘systemic racism’ on rail services RAIL union RMT has urged state owned London North Eastern Railway (LNER) to stop turning a blind eye to systemic racism in its supply chain and end low pay on its outsourced contracts. The revelations came before crunch talks at ACAS between RMT and Gate Solutions, which holds a contract to supply food to LNER’s trains, before strike action planned for next Friday (November 13). The union has sent LNER its new report exposing how LNER’s outsourcing contracts create occupational segregation for ethnic minority workers. The research reveals that ethnic minority workers are four time more likely to be on one of LNER’s outsourcing contracts than directly employed. RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said that RMT research had exposed the dark truth about outsourcing which sustained systemic racism by locking workers into de-skilled, low paid jobs. “The Transport Secretary says that she wants Great British Railways to be an employer of choice and that must mean an end to outsourcing. “LNER needs to settle this pay dispute and discuss how to implement the government’s insourcing policy,” he said.
