I worry this is just a back handed way to defund arts and humanities course.

Scale of job losses in universities would be seen as a national crisis in manufacturing. Or any other strategically vital industry
One professor who recently left academia said it felt like being a miner in 1982 and it’s hard to disagree

The HE sector is being cut by millions. They're doing it by salami cutting each institution one by one, as if it's that institution's problem alone. If staff don't respond nationally, the HE sector will shrink, and thousands will lose their jobs. So?

All out, folks!
UCU have called a day of action in every University in the UK on Friday 20th November. We will be working with sister unions to ensure the biggest possible support for protests, rallies and events that will be held on this day. This is part of our fight to protect jobs and courses as well as build solidarity across the union. Materials will be dispatched to every branch. Start your local planning now.

Spectacular Nature piece on why AI is not conscious and probably will never be. Three arguments: 1) Intelligence is not consciousness. Intelligence is about solving problems. Consciousness is about having subjective experiences. AlphaFold can solve super difficult problems. By contrast, our brains performs complex operations entirely outside awareness. Problem-solving and consciousness are two separate things. 2. Biology is essential. Our brains are alive, down to every cell. Their activity is inseparable from the living tissue that produces it. The idea that consciousness can be reproduced simply by running the right computations on silicon components who do not fight for their life is a very far fetching and, I would add, almost religious, assumption. 3) The physical organization may matter more than the computation. According to integrated information theory, consciousness requires specific causal relationships between a system’s physical components. The computer architectures running today’s AI lack this organization. The comparison with AlphaFold is particularly revealing: Almost nobody things AlphaFold is conscious, despite its inner working is very similar to an LLM Why? Because it does not speak. LLMs do speak like us and therefore we fall into an illusion: Since they speak like us, they must be like us. But this inference is wrong. LLMs are just a series of matrix multiplications. They are not conscious, and they will never be. * Paper in the first reply

On 21 October, it will be 60 years since the terrible tragedy at Aberfan. In the online IOSH magazine, I look back to the accident and ask what it has to teach us about safety today. Many elements will ring bells across other industries. ioshmagazine.com/2026/10/15/…

News that @V_and_A are proposing to cut in person teaching completely, moving to prerecorded & online alone. This is terrible news! I had my first lecturing experiences there & so many remarkable students have benefitted over the years. Please spread the word. Learning matters!
