This morning the Energy Secretary signed a historic clean energy security pact between the UK Government and other European countries, known as the Hamburg Declaration, which will deliver major new offshore wind projects in shared waters โ
gov.uk/government/news/uk-anโฆ
Our Deputy CEO Jane Cooper is in attendance at the North Sea Summit in Hamburg, and has appeared on BBC News and the World Service this morning to discuss the significance of the pact ๐๏ธ
Tune in from 01:30 (bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0โฆ) and from 18:30 (bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w172zsโฆ) to hear her thoughts โฑ๏ธ
"This ambitious announcement to build a vast number of new offshore wind farms jointly with our European partners will increase the energy security of the UK and the whole of the North Sea region significantly. This historic declaration puts offshore wind right at the heart of Europeโs power system, with the UK leading the way. We are strengthening our security collaboration to ensure the North Seaโs critical energy infrastructure is protected from harm, so that we can continue to generate the huge quantities of clean power needed by the UK and our neighbours reliably at all times.
โWe also have valuable opportunities to boost energy resilience and cost-effectiveness by connecting the UK and other European countries with further undersea cables, some of which can be linked directly to offshore wind farms. We will share infrastructure and data to enable clean power to flow more efficiently between our nations, and further integrate our electricity markets to drive down costs for billpayers.โ

Tomorrow morning weโre going to find out the results of the latest Government auction for offshore wind farm contracts.
Hereโs why itโs going to be a good news story for billpayers๐and why ยฃ94 per MWh, not the wholesale price, is the benchmark to judge if theyโll lower bills.
๐ญElectricity demand is growing rapidly, whilst old generators are set to go offline soon โ we need more power and renewables remain the lowest cost way to produce it (and yes, thatโs including the costs to the system to managing their variability).
๐ก๏ธThese wind farms offer stable prices for billpayers, and greater energy security - lowering our exposure to international gas markets and the geopolitics of other countries.
๐ตOnly the lowest cost wind farms will be taken forward, after an incredibly competitive auction for contracts.
Warning: contains an attempt to explain wholesale price suppression.
