Please do not underestimate the power of good communication and effective PR. A single compelling conversation can accomplish more than a thousand angry exchanges.

“Good Jew.” “Gross.” “Ugly.” “Demented.”
Psychologizing me as pathologically ideological or psychologically cowering in the antisemite’s gaze.
And never, not once, no matter how many times these clowns whine and wail, responding to my actual critiques or views.
What if I say these things because I believe them? Because I’ve thought about then long and hard, and am open to changing my conclusions — but only ever get this childish whining from the right, and never any serious engagement with this government’s massive failures.
This person’s only real complaint is that I don’t understand American politics. That in American politics, any admission of anything wrong in this Israeli government is cowardice and disloyalty.
Or something. The argument isn’t articulated all that well.
On the question of my ignorance, I tend to agree. I’m definitely an outsider. The Breakfast Club was a completely new cultural space for me. But I found them sharp as tacks, totally respectful and actually curious. They weren’t just open to our story, they actively sought it out and encouraged me to keep going.
And given the state of the debate in America, of the extent to which the Jewish story is unknown or being actively erased in American politics and culture, I hesitatingly and with all necessary humility want to suggest that maybe you heroic “nothing-to-see-here” activists understand the American conversation even less than ignorant ol’ me.
I’m very open to critique. I’m sure I could have done better. But this petty faux-outrage ain’t it.
If you really unpack it, this is far, far worse and more inexcusable than that frum 1/6 lawyer guy appearing on Tucker
@havivrettiggur should really be ashamed of himself

Mehdi once wrote a book about how to win an argument even when you know you’re wrong. The trick is to be manipulative and dishonest.
Mehdi has never to my knowledge talked seriously about the Israeli historical experience as he demands of me for Palestinians.
And Mehdi is accusing me of ignoring Palestinians in an interview that, though it was meant to be focused on the Israeli experience, talked a lot about Palestinians.
I’m starting to think Mehdi isn’t an entirely trustworthy guy.

The 10 minute rundown he gives of Jewish history from the 1880’s onward culminating in the creation of Israel should be required listening for all. He’s done it in talks before but i think around minute 50 in this interview he does a really succinct version.
He's phenomenal and kudos to @havivrettiggur and @breakfastclubam for this great interview and discussion.

Haviv is now live on Netflix. If you want to hear a conversation about Israel that is outside of your echo chamber. This is the place. If you care about Palestinians, you need to understand what Israelis think, hear our story in our own words. Then judge us.

“These failures are egregious, shocking, and have been tremendously costly for Israel.”
Haviv Rettig Gur argues that Netanyahu’s government has done enormous damage to Israel’s international standing, not just through its policies, but through its disastrous public diplomacy and the inflammatory rhetoric of its own ministers.

“Stop pretending the existential fears of Israelis are fake.”
@havivrettiggur joins @sulkinmaya for a conversation about why international pressure on Israel fails to account for Israelis’ fears of annihilation, the rise of extremism across the Middle East, and what it would take to achieve lasting peace.

Jake and I are bringing The Brink to Israel, and I’d love you to join us. On 1 November, we’ll be in Jerusalem with Haviv Rettig Gur at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center. The following evening, 2 November, Jonathan Conricus joins us at the Enav Cultural Center in Tel Aviv. Both events start at 7.30pm. Come and see us record the podcast in person. You’ll find the booking links at: thebrinkpodcast.co.uk
The event sold out! Thank you to everyone. Haviv and I are incredibly appreciative of your enthusiasm and support. This event is at small hall but we are working on putting together something much bigger in the coming months. Stay tuned 🥳😍
If you’re in New York on the evening of November 17, and you’re sufficiently concerned about the Jewish future to be reading this tweet, why not join us for a live taping of Ask Haviv Anything at the Village Underground for a blunt and honest conversation on the future of Jews in America.
I have a funny feeling I’ll be the optimist on the panel.

Food for thought.
Read my latest:
Israelis have, moreover, lived among the Palestinians, and in the region long enough to have absorbed a good many of our habits and ways, and not all of them, I confess with grief, are good. Among the more recent acquisitions, for which an Arab pro-Israel hasbara advocate bears the dubious credit for introducing it to Israeli public life, is the custom of handing out baklava and dancing when an enemy has been killed, a rite that until very recently Israelis cited as evidence of the backward, if not primitive, Palestinian culture has become. Now some Knesset members perform the ritual themselves, assimilating it into Israeli political culture. And one cannot look at the gangs of hilltop youth, their faces masked in keffiyehs, rocks and stones in hand, without seeing the iconography of the first Intifada. Ben Gvir videos of “revenge porn,” taunting prisoners and revising Israeli national security doctrines to deprive convicted terrorists of fresh pita, remind me of similar videos from Iraq, Syria, and Libya. The fear is that superficial imitation at the level of buffoonery is giving way to deeper absorption of “Arab” ways of doing politics, the process Rene Girard described, in which rivals imitate one another until they become each other’s doubles.
