What really happened to Lucy Harrison? The 23-year-old British woman was shot and killed by her father at his home in Texas on 10 January 2025. He claimed it was a tragic accident. Lucy had asked to see his gun and it accidentally went off as he pulled it out its case, he said. Lucy's mother, Jane Coates, thinks the story doesn't add up. A recovering alcoholic, Lucy's father had been drinking the day she was killed, and initially lied about this to police. CCTV shows he had secretly bought cartons of wine that afternoon. He was never breathalysed, and never charged with manslaughter. Coates is now fighting for the case to be reopened as a criminal investigation: telegraph.co.uk/gift/a30b5a5…

“I just wanted to sit with the investigators and with the DA—for them to look me in the eye and tell me how this investigation was rigorous and thorough.”
Last month Jane Coates flew to Texas from her home in Warrington, England, to demand that Collin County officials reopen the investigation into her daughter's fatal shooting. The shooter was Coates's ex-husband, who said it was an accident. texasmonthly.com/news-politi…

Five years ago today, Sir David Amess was killed while serving the people of Southend West. I knew David as a kind, tireless colleague who dedicated his life to public service. His death was a terrible reminder of the risks faced by those in public life, and of our responsibility to ensure that everyone can serve their communities without fear. Today, we remember David’s extraordinary commitment to the people he represented, and the lasting loss felt by his family, friends and all who knew him.
