All Rails World 2026 talks now online!
Last week more than 1,000 developers gathered in Austin to hear talks from 27 speakers. While all four keynotes got everyone talking about AI, this year’s talks covered a good balance of what's new in Rails and how Rails developers are putting AI to work: from harnesses to Herb, Active Search to HotCell, generators to Lexxy, and so much in between.
If you got caught in the hallway track, or couldn't make it to Austin, catch up on what you missed here: youtube.com/playlist?list=PL…
How does @Donorbox handle serious traffic without overcomplicating its stack?
On the next episode of On Rails, Hussain Akram & @acdesouza (AC) talk to @robbyrussell about the power of deliberately boring infrastructure, why the team moved CI back onto developers' machines, and how they're pulling older parts of the app back toward Rails defaults. They also talk about how they use agent docs to steer AI tools toward the patterns they want the codebase to follow.

The 2026 Ruby on Rails Community Survey results are live! For nearly two decades, we’ve kept a pulse on how the community has evolved. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share how you work. Here’s what you told us.
Agents on Rails update: Muse Wonder and Gemini 4 Argon have now been tested.
- @Meta Muse Wonder (xhigh) had only a 46.6% success rate, landing in the bottom half of the results.
- @GeminiApp Gemini 4 Argon (high) is now in the top 4 performers with a 60.6% success, but it is slower than OpenAI models.
Both models landed on the expensive end of the charts, and it's worth noting that Gemini 4 Argon was even run at a 50% discounted rate (which ends in December).
GPT-6.1 Sol is still the best bang for your buck.
Check out the results at: rubyonrails.org/ai
Agents on Rails is back with Stage 3!
We put the best-performing models to the test with 7 new multi-step tasks, each spanning 3–8 tickets. From building Rails apps from scratch to navigating existing (and at times messy) legacy codebases, we wanted to see how well agents handle the kind of work developers actually face: going back and building on their own work.
Some highlights:
- Best overall: @OpenAI GPT-6.1 Sol offers a strong balance of accuracy, speed, and cost (60.8% success, $0.80 & 23m 35s per run)
- Most accurate: @AnthropicAI Opus 5.5 at max effort (65.3%, but it is also the most expensive and amongst the slowest)
- Fastest: @OpenAI GPT-6 Astra at medium effort (16m 36s, 54% success). Astra's max effort is also fast (22m 36s, 62.3% success).
- Cheapest: @OpenAI GPT-6 Luna ($0.19/run, 43.5% success)
We also combined all tasks from all stages into one central leaderboard.

And yes, @Meta's Muse Wonder is undergoing testing right now, and @GeminiApp 4 Argon will soon follow. Results out soon!

This Week in Rails is out! This week's changes include:
- Minimum Ruby version bumped to 3.3.5 (WeakKeyMap polyfill removal incoming, query cache performance boost ahead)
- Dynamic :controller/:action route segments removed (deprecated since Rails 5.0, now gone)
- `errors.added?` and `errors.details` fixed for validations using `except_on:`
Read the details in this week's newsletter:
rubyonrails.org/2026/10/2/th…
This week there were 34 contributors to Rails. Thank you to all those whose PRs were highlighted this week:
@bhumi1102
Hartley McGuire (skipkayhil)
@tenderlove
@furmanets

Now that all #RailsWorld 2026 talks are live, where should you start? We caught up with speakers @flavorjones, @joelquen, @ChaelCodes, @marcoroth_ , and @realPawelS who each share why their talk should be on your watch list.

I'm churning out prototypes with @rails like hotcakes. It feels like it was built for a time when we'd have coding agents.

The recording of my #RailsWorld 2026 talk where I introduced the reactivity in ReActionView v0.6 is now live on the @rails YouTube channel:

The #RailsWorld talks are all live. Now here’s a little bit of the vibe we found off stage and around the conference. See you next year!
[PS: Song is 'Beatbox Harmonica' by Yuri Lane, who came to perform it live on stage to close Rails World.]
"Deleting code is the sixth love language." 🗑️❤️
We asked three Rails developers at #RailsWorld 2026 in Austin, Texas the same three questions:
1. What was the first thing you built with Rails?
2. What are you building now?
3. And how are you using AI today?
The purpose of a system is what it does, but only for those observing it. In the Closing Keynote of #RailsWorld 2026, @tenderlove covers Ractors, ZJIT, and how AI agents chained a RubyGems.org caching bug into a Rube Goldberg attack.
Aaron's an AI enthusiast, but his takeaway is clear: your compiler promised you the as-if rule, and your AI hasn't. So keep reading your code.

One of the main questions we are facing: what does it mean to be a Rubyist when agents write the code?
At #RailsWorld 2026, @dhh and @yukihiro_matz sat down with Jeremy Daer (@37signals) to talk about the shift from software writer to software maker, why taste and joy still matter, Matz's new #Spinel compiler, and who looks after the foundations that AI makes invisible.

In this day one closing keynote from #RailsWorld 2026, @robbyrussell (@planetargon) talks about the "local workshop" every mature Rails app builds on top of the framework: the patterns, shortcuts, workarounds and oral traditions that teams quietly learn to compensate for, and that AI coding agents are now tripping over.
Drawing on years of experience, Robby agrees that while producing code has gotten cheaper, deciding what belongs, what can be trusted and what should change still takes human judgment.

Thanks to AI, there's never been a better time to get started building software! We asked developers at #RailsWorld what advice they would give to someone looking to start building with #Rails today.
This week @flavorjones joined the Rails Core team. Mike has already been leading security in these critical times, so he will continue focusing on security and improvements to Active Storage and Action Text. Welcome!
