Fantasy computer security problems: "Maybe by sending packets and detecting the timing of the vibrations of the computer case, it is possible for an attacker to gain information about the private key."
Real computer security problems: "The private key was 4. Not 4 digits. 4."
effectively every major tech product has been made worse in the last few years explicitly as a means of inducing growth, all as the tech industry has built giant monoliths selling software under the threat of job replacement, and in doing so has made all hardware more expensive
And with that we have our first dead AI startup, one of the first big names!
Character.AI said on Monday it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US and agreed to sell some of its assets to Walt Disney for $20 million. reuters.com/legal/litigation…

Men do not.

‼️ BREAKING: A zero-day has been released for Muse, Meta's new AI agent, and a Meta AI security engineering manager who left the company this month says he would never use it, citing security and privacy concerns.
He was reacting to the zero-day a researcher posted, which lets malware hijack Muse for Mac. A local process with no special privileges can change an undocumented Muse setting and send dictated prompts to an attacker's server. This could allow for prompt capture, prompt injection and theft of Muse's authentication material.
It can also get access to whatever the user has let Muse access, including files, Mail, Messages, Calendar and Notes.

AI EXPERTS MEETING MONDAY TO DISCUSS WHAT THIS MEANS

An alternative hypothesis:
- model performance is plateauing
- compute is getting much more expensive
- AI data centers are massively unpopular
- slowing down AI development is a way to explain slowing progress, reduce spending, and try to regain some goodwill.
- This is an effort to save the IPO not humanity.
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so.
Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.

I work and publish with many computer scientists and coders. None of us believe this AI apocalypse stuff.
This is a fixation of effective altruism. They have been obsessed with this long before LLMs.
It’s a delusion of self-importance that sells well to venture capital.

Out of EVERYTHING that has happened JUST THIS WEEK ALONE, your primary focus is someone doing PASSWORD SPRAYING against a social media network?
Dawg, the fucking ATF is being extorted by Qilin ransomware group and an unknown Threat Actor is auctioning 153,000,000 United States citizens Drivers Licenses online to extortionists and scammers. That includes high-profile individuals such as THE SECRETARY FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF WAR
Why is X your top priority???
This week, sophisticated cyber criminals attempted a password-recovery attack on hundreds of thousands of X users. X disrupted the attack to prevent user accounts from being captured. But, as we’ve shown, the Justice Department will stop at nothing in its pursuit of cyber fraudsters and scammers. We are working closely with @X to track down the criminals behind this week’s attack. There is no refuge for those that perpetrate their criminal schemes from behind computer screens.

The company which leaked data is IDScan. IDScan does not list all of their customers, however some are publicly known. If you have ever used these companies (and provided an ID) your data has been leaked:
- Shell
- AMC Theaters
- DraftKings
- Dutchie
- FedEx
- Hertz
- Chevrolet (General Motors)
- GameStop
- Jack Henry
- MRI (Checkpoint ID)
- Polaris
- Simmons Bank
- LendingUSA
- Circa Resort & Casino
- Planet 13
- Rouses Market
- US Coast Guard Academy
- Caesars Entertainment
- Motorola
I really recommending reading this.
In summary, a company which does ID verification for in-person interactions (hotels, car rentals, ID verification for alcohol or marijuana, etc) has some how exposed over 153,000,000 drivers licenses for people in the United States and Canada.
It is a catastrophic data breach, probably one of the worse I've ever seen. If you're in the United States and have traveled, gotten a hotel, purchased marijuana or alcohol, there is a high probability you're in this.
Unlike other breaches, this includes a photo of the person (from the license), making verification you've identified the person significantly easier.
This poses a significant threat to celebrities (musicians, YouTubers, streamers, adult entertainers, actors, etc), politicians, lawyers, wealthy people (CEOs, investors, people of public interest), Law Enforcement Officers, etc
Krebs himself, and several other security researchers, have already confirmed they're in the data leak.
tl;dr gah damn dawg this company is going to be sued into oblivion
