It’s all about encouraging each of us to step up, get involved, and make a difference right where we live. 🕯️ 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 🕯️ Last night, Melanie and I joined our community for the 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗩𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗹, to remember, reflect and stand in solidarity with everyone affected by family violence. 💜 Walking together in purple, candles in hand, was a powerful reminder of something I believe deeply: 👉 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘶𝘱. 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴, 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘴𝘢𝘺𝘴, “𝘞𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦.” 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️ The walk itself was deeply symbolic. We are blessed to live in an 𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, and every step we took together carried a message to every victim and survivor of domestic violence: 💜 𝘞𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝘞𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬 𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 💜 As a community, we will keep advocating for you, and we will keep supporting the incredible work of organizations like Stepping Stones Crisis Society, where help, safety and hope are always within reach here in the City of Cold Lake 🤝 🙏 Thank you to the organizers, volunteers and everyone who came out to honour a loved one, show support or simply learn more. 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞. 💡 This past Friday I had the honour of MC'ing the Cold Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year Awards 🏆 here in the City of Cold Lake. Afterward, someone asked me, "Don't you get nervous public speaking?" Honestly? No. And the reason goes back many years. 👇 ✈️ 𝐀 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐫 While serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force, I was asked to sit on a selection board in Red Deer for youth cadets applying to programs across Canada. Our board was for the Canadian Space Agency 🌌. Picture it: five of us in full uniform, seated in a row. Intimidating for anyone, let alone a teenager. One young lady, just 14 or 15 years old, stood up to speak. She had a severe stutter, and as the words wouldn't come, the tears did. 😢 I asked my colleagues for a quick break and walked her to the canteen for a drink. I asked how she was feeling. She told me she'd stuttered since birth, and when she got nervous, she simply couldn't speak. We talked for a long while. And here's what I learned: she was a little scientist 🔬, building and creating incredible things in her parents' garage. This kid was 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘵. 🏅 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐚 𝐃𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞 I asked if she'd ever watched the Olympics. She had. "Ever notice when reporters ask the athletes if they're nervous, they almost always say, 'No, I'm excited'?" That's not luck. That's mindset. 🧠 Nervousness and excitement are nearly the 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠. Racing heart. Butterflies. A rush of energy. The only difference is the story you tell yourself about it. 👉 𝐍𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐬 says: "What if I fail?" 👉 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 says: "Look what I get to do!" So I told her: "You shouldn't be nervous. You should be 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥! You're applying to a 𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘮. You're doing amazing things. Go in there and be excited about that!" She walked back into that room, stood tall, and presented beautifully. 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫. 🙌 Same girl. Same room. Same five uniforms. The only thing that changed was how she named the feeling. 🪔 𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐥𝐞 Years later, I was asked to MC Diwali Night at the Cold Lake Energy Centre. And yes, the nerves started creeping in. So I took my own advice. I thought of that young lady, and reminded myself how 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 it was to help celebrate the East Indian community and the wonderful diversity of cultures we have right here in Cold Lake. 🇨🇦 She taught me as much as I taught her that day. 🔥 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 That pounding heart before the big moment? It isn't a warning sign. 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥. ⛽ The interview. The presentation. The phone call you've been putting off. The new business. The first step. Don't tell yourself "I'm nervous." For me, two of those people are: 🛡️ 𝗣𝗮𝗺 at 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 My insurance broker, who makes sure the properties, people and businesses I'm responsible for are protected. 🎉 𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑 𝐎𝐍 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐂𝐈𝐋 🎉 One year ago, Cold Lake trusted me with a seat at the council table. 🙏 It's been 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨, but most importantly... 💪 𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑 𝐎𝐅 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐖𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐔𝐏. 💪 📌 𝐀 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑 𝐎𝐅 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐂𝐎𝐋𝐃 𝐋𝐀𝐊𝐄 Let me be clear: 𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧'𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞. Good government is a relay, and I'm proud to be carrying the baton. 🏃‍♂️ 🏥 An 𝐌𝐑𝐈 partnership for Cold Lake, more residents getting family doctors, and Saturday clinics being piloted ✈️ Continued fight with Ottawa on PILT for 4 Wing and our military families 🇨🇦 💰 2026 municipal tax increase held to 𝟐.𝟒𝟖%, down from 4.58% 🚒 New tools for Cold Lake Fire-Rescue and provincial recognition for our emergency support services 🛩️ An aerospace and defence MOU with Leduc County, Sturgeon County and Edmonton Airports 🚰 $602,000 in provincial water funding and a new 16 Street sidewalk 🌐 Measuring real demand for high-speed fibre to bring investors to the table 🎭 CRACH grants supporting local arts, culture and recreation ✅ 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐈 𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐒𝐀𝐘 I showed up. 💪 🏛️ For council meetings, with every page of the agenda package read 📋 For board and committee meetings 🎤 For conferences, learning from other communities and bringing ideas home 👠 Walked a Mile in Her Shoes (and yes, in heels!) 🌭 Grilled hot dogs for Sparkle in the Park 🎙️ Took the stage as MC for the Chamber Business of the Year Awards and Extreme Mudfest ✈️ Hosted events for the Cold Lake Airshow 🚓 Helped Fill a Cop Car for the Animal Shelter 🐾 💼 Mentored new entrepreneurs building their dreams right here at home 🧑‍🎓 Attended youth meetings to hear from the next generation ☕ Had coffee with our seniors, who built this community 🍳 Spoke at Men's Breakfasts 🤝 And answered every call, message and "hey Ray, got a minute?" in the grocery store 👣 𝐖𝐇𝐘 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐖𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐔𝐏 𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒 In 25 years of uniform at 4 Wing, I learned that trust isn't built with words. It's built by being there, every time, especially when it's hard. You can't represent people you don't see. You can't fix what you haven't heard. You can't vote well on a decision you didn't prepare for. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐛. ✅ 🙌 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐊 𝐘𝐎𝐔 🏛️ 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐨𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐬: We don't always agree, and that's how it should be. Mel and I really enjoyed attending the Stepping Stones Crisis Society business mixer tonight! 🙌 I was there as a 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 Cold Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce and as your City of Cold Lake 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗿, to network and to show support for this vital organization. 💼🏛️ 🏡 𝗔 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 Since 1982, Stepping Stones has given women and children in crisis a safe place to land. It serves Cold Lake, Bonnyville and the wider Lakeland. Its new facility is a true investment in our region's future. 💪 🤝 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 + 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 = 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲 It was wonderful to see so many local business leaders in one room. Everyone came to learn more and to find ways to help. When our business community steps up, the whole community benefits. 🌟 🐾 𝗔 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 Tonight was also the 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 we got to see our donation in person: the 𝗣𝗮𝘄𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆. Right now, Ottawa is not holding up its end. So every Wednesday, I am going to keep this in front of you until it is made right. ⚖️ 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗦 Council voted unanimously to formally raise concerns with the Minister of PSPC. Cypress County confirmed that information PSPC and Justice Canada put before the PILT Dispute Advisory Panel, and again before the Federal Court of Appeal, was false. PSPC is now quietly changing its own process to make that story look true. 🏠 𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗜𝗧 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦 Payment in Lieu of Taxes pays for the roads, water, fire and emergency services that 4 Wing families use every day. When Ottawa lowballs those payments, Cold Lake taxpayers cover the gap, including the military families who already sacrifice plenty. 🍁🦃 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲! 🦃🍁 ✈️ 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻 Having served in the Military along with my love of travel, I've travelled all over the world. Melanie and I just got back from three weeks in Germany 🇩🇪, Austria 🇦🇹 & Greece 🇬🇷. We saw castles & cathedrals, mountain villages & ancient ruins, & enjoyed more great food and good company than I can count. Travel opens your eyes & fills your heart, & I’m thankful we had the chance to go. 🌍 But I’ll tell you something. 𝘕𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘪𝘴, 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 City of Cold Lake. 🏡💙 The lake, the sky, the people who wave when you drive by. There’s no place quite like it. 🙏 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗲 I’ll be honest with you. Like everyone, I have days when I’m down, angry or sad. On those days, gratitude is what brings me back. When I stop and think about what I’m thankful for, it takes me to a place of healing. ❤️‍🩹 It doesn’t make the hard days disappear, but it reminds me how much good there is in my life. Travel deepens that gratitude for me. Seeing how people live in other countries, sharing their food & traditions, & learning a little of their history makes you look at your own life with fresh eyes. 🌍 Sometimes it shows you something you’d like to bring home. More often, it reminds you how fortunate we are to live where we do, & how easy it is to take that for granted. 💛 𝗜’𝗺 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗙𝗼𝗿... 🏘️ 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, the volunteers, businesses, neighbours & families who make Cold Lake the place it is. 🤝 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 I’ve been blessed with over the years. 🇨🇦 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲 & 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀' 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 🇨🇦 🕯️ This weekend, Canadians paused to remember the police and peace officers who gave their lives in the line of duty, 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘮. 💙 Here in Cold Lake, we're served every day by the members of our 𝗥𝗖𝗠𝗣 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, our 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘀, and the 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲 at 𝟰 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗴. They answer the call at 3 a.m., on our highways in a January storm, and on the worst days of people's lives.
