🚨WOW! According to @BLaw $BEAM has recently filed a lawsuit against one of its former scientists which is the co-founder of the Chinese BioTech company YolTech Therapeutics now merged into $BOLD via Serapha Bio, claiming that its former employee stole its trade secrets. According to BEAM’s lawsuit while the employee was allegedly still on the company’s payroll the employee used stolen trade secrets to rapidly file patents on a treatment for the same rare lung and liver disease - alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency or AATD, for which Beam has started developing its own Base-Editing treatment called BEAM-302 almost a decade ago. When I read last June that YolTech was merging into $BOLD - via the Boundless - Serapha merger, I immediately wrote that “the fact that an American technology - Base Editing - which was invented and developed in the U.S by Prof. @davidrliu of Harvard and the @broadinstitute, was taken to China to be used in order to develop a parallel pipeline to BEAM’s (AATD) and then returned to the American stock market via a back channel merger is a super negative signal for the entire American BioTech and Pharma ecosystem.” BEAM practically had no other choice but to sue its former employe and this will be a super important test case for the entire American BioTech and Pharma ecosystem and to its ability to safeguard its IP rights. Super interesting!
Intellectual Property (IP) disputes have been part of the CRISPR and Gene Editing landscape from its very beginning. Although previous disputes were mostly between American companies 🧵👇 the $BEAM - $BOLD one is IMO fundamentally different. The fact that an American technology - Base Editing - which was invented and developed in the U.S by Prof. @davidrliu of Harvard and the @broadinstitute, was taken to China to be used in order to develop a parallel pipeline to BEAM’s (AATD) and then returned to the American stock market via a back channel merger is a super negative signal for the entire American BioTech & Pharma ecosystem. IMO this precedent literally means that anyone can simply take a proprietary technology which was developed in the U.S, copy it entirely - for the lack of a better term, only to profit from it without rewarding the actual scientists and entrepreneurs who have spent their lives developing these groundbreaking technologies and bringing them into the clinic. American policy makers need to ask themselves what kind of an incentive a case such as this provides for the next “David Liu” who is sitting right now in his or her lab somewhere in America and for hours upon hours is developing the next novel Genetic delivery platform or the next cure for Cancer? This will have serious implications on the entire industry - far beyond these two companies!

The wealth gap between people using AI and those ignoring it is going to be massive. I’m doing things in one hour that used to take me five days. It’s like watching someone use a horse and buggy while everyone else has a car. There’s no competition. Adapt or get left behind.
