Surreal to finally have this: one of my all time favourite films in 4K on its 100th anniversary, with a 52 minute video essay by me included in the extras. Out soon! A Brave Engineer charts the entirety of Buster Keaton's career through his use of trains, I'm very proud of it.

On with HOW PONYO WAS BORN (2009), with 2.5 hours down and only ten hours to go... This lovely aside sees Miyazaki aghast at the volume of his new car horn. After getting his friend to dampen its power with some tape he's VERY pleased & goes on to have a productive afternoon.

It's hard to believe, for example, that someone like Miyazaki could feel like he hasn't achieved anything at all, but what other mindset could realistically have pushed him to create such a rich body of work over the years? A burden and a gift, I think.

So SPACED is finally coming to blu-ray and it's from an "algorithmic" remaster in 4K... C'mon, seriously? @edgarwright did you have any involvement in this? Because an AI upscale is most disappointing...

I'd like to think that if this film happens (and branding it EPISODE X is likely their best course of money spinning action, sadly), the plot will be a bit more interesting than that... but SW has always been big dumb fun and the fact Daisy is game to come back is pretty f'n cool

The death of editing... he’s not an editor anymore; he’s a producer. Is editing the old way gone forever? Maybe... if you edit 30-second YouTube Shorts. No... if you edit film or TV. Legendary editor Walter Murch said 51% of the reason to cut is Emotion. AI doesn’t have that.

I'm an hour into the 12.5 epic HOW PONYO WAS MADE (2009) & it's an absolute cosy delight with grumpy Hayao so far. Subs are not ideal but I can follow along with most of it. The frustrations of a creative by way of slow cinema in the form of a lo-fi fly on the wall doc. Perfect.

I love this poster but am wary of it probably not being painted at all, I had a look around and it's just credited to a company, not an artist.

Ecstatic to finally be able to see HOW PONYO WAS BORN - HAYAO MIYAZAKI'S THOUGHT PROCESS (2009), a 12.5 hour fly-on-the-wall documentary covering the production of his 2008 film PONYO ON THE CLIFF BY THE SEA. One of my cinema journey white whales!
