The latest season of @ehanford’s #SoldAStory has particular resonance for me. The opening audio in episode 1 is of a preschool classroom in 1966. That’s the year I started school and was blessed to be taught (explicitly) by Mrs Enid R. I reconnected with Mrs R. late last year who told me “We didn’t call it explicit instruction in those days. We just called it teaching”.

Evolution of the Alphabet
(by @usefulcharts)

ALT Infographic showing the "Evolution of the Alphabet" from Proto-Sinaitic (c. 1750 BCE) to Modern Latin Script. Colorful arrows trace the development of each letter through Phoenician, Archaic Greek, Archaic Latin, and Roman scripts, culminating in the modern 26-letter alphabet. The image demonstrates how letter shapes transformed over time.

Dr Bartek Rajkowski aka @ReadingDoctor gave a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of reading failure in his speech at the @CodeReadNetwork Gala ball. A must read for parents, teachers and policymakers.

I am very much looking forward to presenting the Dean's Lecture at @UniMelb in November, about why it's so important for schools to encourage real reading and the acquisition of knowledge for all students. It's a free event and tickets are now available.

This one’s been working its way through the academic publishing machinery for a while and thanks to @tserry2504 and @PamelaSnow2, it is here. Such a joy to work with them, @DrLSHammond @TinaDanielZ, Dr Kym Simoncini & @ceacg while the Catalyst project was getting started. Thanks to the Snow Foundation for supporting it.

If, like me, you are fascinated by the history of theory and research on reading, this brilliant journal article is for you. If you just want the moral of the story, it’s please stop using running records for assessing reading. They are based on disproven theory and flawed research. There are many better options.

Thanks Jennifer. Your robust research has been instrumental.
Explicit instruction and systematic phonics are proven as most effective ways to teach children to read and we need to do what’s best for children - regardless of postcode, languages spoken at home or neurodiversity.
Thank you @bencarroll for hearing the advice of reading experts in Victoria and around Australia, and acting decisively on behalf of students and teachers.

oh dear - attending the session by @ehanford @PamelaSnow2 @tserry2504 @DrLSHammond today where they all clearly talked about how this is NOT evidence based nor useful and is basically a waste of precious teaching time and leading children to use unhelpful strategies @SOTLAus
It’s 2024 and a parent at our clinic was given this bookmark with a bunch of PM readers by her well-meaning but ill-informed school in an effort to help her teach her child to read. All of this eagle eyein’, fish lippin’, stretchy snakein’, monkey chunkin’, lion tryin’, dolphin flippin’ and frog skippin’ is a crock of 💩, and not consistent with teaching kids to read properly: readingdoctor.com.au/how-sho…
