Went to the Southernmost point in Key West yesterday. Zoomed in all the way & could see no sign of Cuba.
Flat-Earthers, how is this possible on a flat, planar, “we-see-too-far” Earth?
You’re always talking about how visible Chicago’s skyline is at 60+ miles right?

Flying this fast this close to the ground is already insane.
Doing it in a Panavia Tornado while tightly contouring rolling terrain is something else entirely.
The Tornado was designed for exactly this kind of high-speed, low-level penetration.

Test Piloting: how to recover an out-of-control F-18.
On the right is my cockpit view, with all displayed info. Took about 30 seconds, fell 2 miles. I described the sensations real-time. Ejection seat as a backup plan.
We did well over 100 of these, learning, changing the pilot procedures & airplane software to make it forever safer.

Code brown! Code brown!
I think I speak for us all when I say “Yikes!”
Landing the F-14 on the boat was never easy even under ideal conditions. Add in bad weather & visibility, no DFCS & the A model’s tempermental TF30 engines and that’s a recipe for a bad day.

An A-6E Intruder lands on USS America on February 16, 1991. After landing, the aircraft loses all braking power and is unable to stop, resulting in the two crew members ejecting from the aircraft.
In the video you can see deck crew racing to grab the two crewmen as their inflated parachutes cause them to slide across the abrasive deck. Both crewmen will sustain minor injuries as a result of the incident.
The Intruder is later pushed over the side of the ship and into the water by a small crane as returning aircraft from strike missions in Iraq were running low on fuel and needed to land on the carrier.
